1-A-Day, 3″ Blocks — Rail Fence

 Rail Fence Block

Today we’ll make this cutie.

Had lots more fun going through my scrap basket!

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cut:

  • 1 rectangle 1″ x 9″ of 3 different fabrics

Sew them together being sure

to press each seam flat as sewn,

then to one side so the seam stays straight.

 

Check to be sure the strip set is straight by laying a ruler over it.

 

If it’s not perfectly straight,

take & press it again.

If you sewed straight seams,

you should be able to straighten it out.

Cut strip set into 4 segments 2″ long.

 

Arrange then sew the block.

Press as shown below.

Remove stitches in center seam allowance.

Make a couple or few a more!

1-A-Day, 3″ Blocks — Log Cabin

  Log Cabin Block

Today we’ll make this classic cutie.

 

Had lots more fun going through my scrap basket!

 

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cut:

  • 1 red square 1 1/2″

 

  • 1 green rectangle 1″ x 1  1 /2″
  • 1 green rectangle 1″ x 2″
  • 1 green rectangle 1″ x 2  1/2″
  • 1 green rectangle 1″ x 3″

 

  • 1 cream rectangle 1″ x 2″
  • 1 cream rectangle 1″ x 2  1/2″
  • 1 cream rectangle 1″ x 3″
  • 1 cream rectangle 1″ x 3  1/2″

 

 

Start by sewing the 1″ x 1  1/2″ green rectangle

onto the left side of the red square.

Press as sewn, then away from the square.

 

 

Next, sew the 1″ x 2″ green rectangle onto the bottom.

Press.

 

 

Sew the 1″ x 2″ & 1″ x 1  1/2″ cream rectangles

to the right side & top.

Sew the 1″ x 2  1/2″ & 1″ x 3″ green rectangles to the side & bottom.

 

 

Sew the remaining cream rectangles

as shown to complete the block.

Be sure to press after each rectangle is added.

 

 

I had fun playing with fabric combinations in a couple more.

Today we’ll make this cutie.

 

Had lots more fun going through my scrap basket!

Cut:

  • 1 blue sq. 2″
  • 2 blue sq’s. 1  3/4″
  • 2 cream sq’s. 1  3/4″
  • 4 cream rec’s. 1  1/4″ x 2″

I didn’t use Thangles this time, just made the hst’s from squares.

Use your favorite method.

I pressed these seams open.

Trim the hst’s to 1  1/4″.

Arrange the pieces.

 

Sew them together.

I pressed the last seams open & removed the stitched in the seam allowances.

Sound familiar???

Today we’ll make this cutie.

Cut:

  • 1 beige sq. 2″
  • 8 beige sq’s. 1  1/4″
  • 4 blue rectangles 1  1/4″ x 2″
  • 4 blue sq’s. 1  1/4″

Use the 1  1/4″ x 2″ blue rectangles & 1  1/4″ beige squares

to make 4 flying geese units.

I used my “Lazy Susan” technique.

Use your favorite method.

I pressed the seams open.

Arrange the pieces then assemble the block.

I pressed the last 2 seams open.

Make a couple more.

I can’t believe until now

I hadn’t given this adorable block a thought!

Today we’ll make this cutie.

 

Had lots more fun going through my scrap basket!

Today I found an orange!

Love Thimbleberries oranges!!!

I don’t have a lot of them.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cut:

  • 2 cream sq’s. 2″
  • 1 cream sq. 1  1/2″
  • 1 cream strip 1″ x 6  1/2″
  • 2 orange sq’s. 2″
  • 1 orange strip 1″ x 6  1/2″

I didn’t use Thangles this time, just made the hst’s from squares.

Use your favorite method.

I pressed these seams open.

Trim the hst’s to 1  1/2″.

Sew the cream 1″ x 6  1/2″ strip to the orange 1″ x 6  1/2″ strip.

I pressed this seam open.

Cut 4 segments 1  1/2″.

Arrange pieces then sew together.

I pressed the last 2 seams open…

Isn’t it adorable???

This one is like Lay’s Potato Chips.

No one can make just 1!

I had fun playing with the color placement in the blocks.

Yes, it’s real but odd name!

This block is another 9-Patch,

but a bit more sophisticated don’t you think?

Cut:

  • 4 black sq’s. 1  1/4″
  • 1 black sq. 2″
  • 4 cream rec’s. 1  1/4″ x 2″

 

Arrange the pieces then sew them together.

Truly can’t get much simpler!

Today we’ll make this cutie.

Had lots more fun going through my scrap basket!

Cut:

  • 2 cream squares 2″
  • 2 cream squares 1  1/2″
  • 2 cream rectangles 1″ x 1  3/4″
  • 1 green rectangle 2″ x 3  1/2″
  • 1 green rectangle 1  1/2″ x 3  1/2″
  • 1 black square 1″

 

I used my “Lazy Susan” technique for both layers of the tree.

The top tier will need to but cut & sewn one side at a time,

but the lower tier squares can both be layered,

cut & sewn at once since they don’t overlap each other.

I pressed these seams open.

Sew the 1″ black square between the 2 cream 1″ x 1  3/4″ rectangles.

I pressed these seams open as well.

Assemble the block.

I pressed the last 2 seams open too.

I made a couple more trees using 2 greens for one of the tress.

My Life, Quarantine Quilting

COVID 19 Quarantine Quilting & Supporting Our Local Quilt Shops

suznquilts

I hope you’re staying healthy during this crazy quarantine period.

It’s a strange time for sure.

What are you doing with all of your quarantine time?

Are you making masks?

I’ve made a few dozen by now.

Are you getting lots of quilting done?

I’m actively working on our 3″ blocks…

My stack is considerably taller now.

I’ve also started a new project with our guild.

There are 182, 4″ x 5″ blocks in the book.

I’ve cut kits for each of them.

Yesterday I posted #1.

Just 181 to go!

Oh yes, I’ve also spent COUNTLESS hours trying to get our lousy internet to work properly…

(& my mom’s too. They live just down the street & also having issues).

I guess our crappy service just cannot take the overload.

It’s off, it’s on, it’s off… Welcome to rural America.

Anyone use Viasat?

It’s the only service that looks like it might work,

but I don’t know anyone who’s had success with it

so we’re leery to jump into a 2 year contract with them.

Perhaps you’re working on your flower beds getting them ready for the season?

Can’t really take credit here except

that I have dug some up to share

& to move closer to the house to better appreciate them.

Getting some exercise?

I’m walking 2.4 miles/day.

It was so windy one day last week that it blew this sign loose.

Love that it’s pointing up!

Here’s my sign!

Doing lots of praying, but that’s not new for me.

I realize many are out of work & I feel badly for them.

I’ve had all of my spring into summer shows & teaching opportunities disappear.

I also feel bad for our local quilt shops that have had to close during the quarantine.

If you can, please support them.

Many shops have websites that are open.

Some are offering curb-side pick-up.

It’s going to be hard for many to recover & we need them!

If you’re having problems finding notions

I have all the notions that I use on my website for sale.

If I don’t have something you need I may be able to order it.

A Quilt Along, My Life

1-A-Day, 3″ Blocks — The Sickle

The Sickle Block

Odd name for such a cute block that we’ll make today.

Had lots more fun going through my scrap basket!

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cut:

  • 1 cream sq. 2  5/8″
  • 1 gold sq. 2  5/8″
  • 4 cream sq’s. 1  1/4″
  • 4 gold sq’s. 1  1/4″

 

Layer the cream & gold 2 5/8″ squares right sides together.

If you’re lazy like me,

slice them corner to corner.

Use that cut edge to sew scant 1/4″ seams for 2 hst’s.

Sew each 1  1/4″ cream square to a 1  1/4″ gold square.

Chain piece to make this go quicker.

I pressed the sewn squares toward the gold fabric.

As I mentioned previously,

it helps the seams nest for best results!

The triangles I pressed open.

Trim them to 2″ x 2″.

Arrange pieces for the block then sew them together.

I pressed the last seam open.

I also removed the stitches in the seam…

You know the drill by now! lol

I debated using more than 2 fabrics

but that would probably change the block to another block!

So many quilt blocks that are almost but not quite same.
