This week we will be making a bunch of flying geese filler blocks.
And look, just one more area of the quilt to make after this week!
Since some of these flying geese segments run into each other,
I’ve given each segment a number.
Then, below I tell you how many flying geese to make for that segment.
For segment 1, you will need to make 6 flying geese.
Segment 2 make 6.
Segment 3 make 10.
Segment 4 make 11.
Segment 5 make 7.
Segment 6 make 10.
That’s it!
No Dresden plates this week.
How is your Christmas shopping & decorating going?
I’ve started my Christmas shopping
& we’re mid-Christmas decorating…
Since I’m still photographing one of my new quilt pattern samples,
my living room is a bit chaotic;
semi-Christmas, semi-photo shoot…
Soon I’ll be done with the photography
& eventually I’ll also have the Christmas decorating finished.
Shopping… I’ll be done by Christmas Eve, for sure.

It’s probably smaller than you first imagined.
I was right, wasn’t I?
And while I was painfully making this teeniest of Tiny Dresden plates,
I was also feeling bad for how I’d treated some of my fellow Tiny Dresden seamstresses these past few months.
REALLY BAD!
I realize now that being out of your comfort zone is hard!
I’ve made so many Tiny & Mini Dresden plates that I can practically make them in my sleep.
These petals are MUCH (MUCH) SMALLER than I’m used to sewing.
Incredibly cute,
but SO…MUCH…SMALLER…
Hard to grasp.
Hard to turn.
The first one turned out so poorly that I decided to try again.
And again.
The 3rd time I decided to elongate the petals so I would have more fabric to hold onto
while they were going through the machine,
then trim them as needed as I sewed them into the plate.
I also tried trimming the seam allowances,
something that I never do while making Tiny Dresden plates.
It’s just not necessary.
At this point it became necessary to trim the center of the plate (the part that I elongated)
and I wasn’t even sure if it was going to come together at all like it should.
The 3rd plate turned out so much better!
While experimenting, I was reminded of several of my TD students from more than one TD workshop.
We would together get that first plate made,
then they’d usually go back to their space & make the second plate by themselves.
It was fun seeing the excitement on their faces as they became more comfortable with the process,
and do a much better job on their second plate, yay!
I now know your frustration and disappointment at not having the success as anticipated.
But with a bit of perseverance,
& the right tools…
thanks to Rosa & her Apliquick Bars,
my 1/2″ diameter center is perfectly round with no trouble at all!
I was finally able to fill this adorable little acorn frame that’s been hanging empty
in my sewing room for more than a decade!
Now I have a new fall decoration, something to display for years to come.
This makes my heart sing.
I hope I’ve inspired you to maybe do something a bit out of your comfort zone too.

This week we will take the remaining 4 Tiny Dresden plates,
made during Week 15, and make 1 beautiful block.
This block isn’t printed in Dresden Quilt Workshop “as is”, BUT that’s the fun part!
(No whining!!!)
Everything you need is right here & in the Friendship Garden quilt instructions.
(This is why I named it “Dresden Quilt Workshop Challenge, remember?)
First thing you’ll want to do is decide on background fabric for each of the
4 Tiny Dresden plates.
Then decide what the flying geese point fabrics will be.
(No need to make this beautifully staged layout, but it was fun!)
Yes, I’m aware I’m weird. I’m #5 of 6 kids, so I’ve been told plenty of times…
Then you’ll want to be sure you still have “the right” Tiny Dresden on “just the right” background print…
No indecision here, lol!!!
Then choose just the right center fabric for each plate.
Then sew the 4 blocks together.
That’s it!
Just 1 block this week ;)

One would think with being gone almost a week
that I would have lots of pictures to show from market, but…
We are always so busy from the time we leave until we get home that I forget to take pictures!
I did snap a shot of our almost empty booth.
Our Schoolhouse sessions were well received.
Schoolhouse is where I reserve time slots to show
& discuss my new patterns the day before Quilt Market officially starts.
“Joy to the World” is one of my favorite new Tiny Dresden quilts.
I designed the nativity scene hanger set & Ackfeld mfg. is making them.
(They’re available on my website)
“BOO” is probably my best-selling new pattern since it was introduced at Spring Quilt Market in Portland, OR.
Once our Schoolhouse sessions were over we were able to finish hanging the booth.
There was a steady stream of shoppers at this market.
That means lots of shop owners to talk to and I’m very pleased with our sales.
It does make it a bit more of a challenge for me to remember the less important stuff,
like getting our pic taken in our booth, lol!
It was the third day of market before we remembered to have a neighbor take our picture!
Robin Koehler (Nestlings by Robin) was my helper (a.k.a. slave labor) for this market.
Besides having new designs featured in various quilt magazines & catalogs,
she also has a new series of tulip quilting stencils with
Quilting Creations, which debuted at market as well!
Some are for hand quilting and some are continuous line for machine quilting.
You can find them on Creative Creation’s site here!
Unfortunately, I hardly got out of our booth to see what else came to Quilt Market.
What I did get out to see, I saw during the little bits of time before the show opened each morning.
However, between putting finishing touches on my own booth the first morning,
going to Mass as the beautiful nearby Annunciation church the second morning,
& getting our rental van replaced the third morning… grrrr.
I always take a pic of my rentals’ license plate in case I need it to check into a hotel or WHATEVER.
It didn’t leave a lot of time for quilt market adventure…. but,
I saw a lovely new fabric line by Betsy Chutchian, Susanna’s Scraps that I really like.
Minick & Simpson also has a pretty new line, Crystal Lake, with lovely background prints,
& I really liked their adorable sand bucket!
And Regency Sussex by Christopher Wilson-Tate
is another collection that has that beautiful aged charm that I love.
Unfortunately it’s pretty blue… but those golds & neutrals!!!
We’ll see…

Sorry, I’ve been a bit busy since getting home from Quilt Market.

This week you’ll just be making 7 Tiny Dresden plates to pop inside upcoming blocks.
You may want to take a look at where they will sit in the quilt to help you make fabric decisions, or not.

I of course had to make all kinds of decisions up front.
Once those decisions were made, it was on to the fun stuff!
