My Life, New Christmas Quilt Fabric, new fabric collection

Beautiful (fabric) Snowfall

suznquiltssnowfall1

I think you’ll agree, Snowfall is beautiful!

Of course I’m talking about a new fabric line

not the stuff that comes with cold weather

like what we had a taste of last week,

along with two nearly 70 degree days.

Much to Nemo’s dismay it was so nice I gave him a bath one of those days!

But nope, I’m talking about the new Snowfall fabric line.

suznquiltssnowfall6

This is Minick & Simpson’s new Christmas line by Moda.

It is scheduled to be delivered to quilt shops near you in April.

It will be here before we know it.

Goodness, it’s Valentine’s Day already tomorrow.

Where does the time go?

suznquiltssnowfall2

I love these ladies and their beautiful fabrics!

suznquiltssnowfall1

This line has cute little prints in my favorite Christmas colors.

suznquiltssnowfall7

I’m pretty sure they designed it just for me ;)

suznquiltssnowfall8

They’ll make perfect little Dresden plates don’t you think?

suznquiltssnowfall10

It has some gorgeous woven plaids too.

suznquiltssnowfall9

I’ve been harboring these beauties since December!

suznquiltssnowfall15

The iron however, I just bought over the weekend.

suznquiltssnowfall11

Isn’t it adorable???

suznquiltssnowfall14

& it looks so cute with Snowfall don’t you think?

suznquiltssnowfall12

I need to stop procrastinating

suznquiltssnowfall13

but I hardly know where to start.

The first cut it always the hardest!

I don’t want to waste a single snippet.

I hope your day looks just as bright!

Dresden Plate Quilt, Mini Dresden Patterns, My Life, New Quilt pattern sample, New tiny Dresden plate quilts, Quilt Retreats

Retreating Again

It’s always fun to get away to sew (& eat)!

And sew I did, all weekend long…

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-25-17

I got a lot done on my new pattern sample.

I sewed the Tiny Dresden petals that I showed you last week.

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-17-17

Trimming and then pressing.

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-25-172

Turning right side out and making pretty points.

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-25-173

All 384 of them!

And, not 1 was lost since I was using my new cutlery tray

to transport them back & forth to the ironing board and my sewing machine.

I had made the Mini Dresden centers last week.

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-25-177

Roxanne’s EZ-Squeeze glue, my Classic Metal Company brochure,

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-25-176

and Appliquick Bar give me very precise results every single time.

I also had 4 half (+ seam allowance) circles to made for the 4 half Mini Dresden blocks.

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-25-178

Same process, but you don’t have to cover the long straight edge

since it will go inside the seam allowance when it’s sewn into the quilt.

Fun, fun, fun!!!

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-25-174

32 Tiny Dresden plates

5 Mini Dresden plates

4 half Mini Dresden plates

32 freezer paper leaves

&

8 stems

(but I needed 16… 4 x 4 =16, not 8!!!)

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-25-175

Each 23″ block has 1 Mini Dresden plate,

8 Tiny Dresden plates,

8 leaves & 4 stems.

I got 3 of the 4 big blocks appliqued before we left Sunday,

but you’ll have to wait to see those, sorry.

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-25-176

This is all that’s left of the pieces.

Can’t wait to finish it.

It’s been a whole month since Christmas.

Dresden Plate Quilt, My Life, New Moda Fabric Collection

A New Year, A New Quilt

suznquiltsdq53fabricsSo, how is 2017 going for you so far?

The teacher & the student have both gone back to school.

I’ve adjusted to being another year older…

Christmas & all it’s trimmings are put away,

but I’m lucky that it still resembles Christmas in my sewing room

& I’m back at the sewing machine.

Meet Sweet Cherry Wine.

 suznquiltsdq53fabricssweetcherrywine

This is Blackbird’s new fabric collection by Moda,

displayed on my extra cool Christmas gift from David!!!

It’s an antique thread display case/cash wrap

from a general store circa 1880-1890, that he found on Craigslist.

I feel a bit like the Olsen’s (from Little House on the Prairie).

suznquiltsdq53fabricssweetcherrywine3

(and a Coral Bells by Jan Patek charcoal that I added)

suznquiltsdq53fabricssweetcherrywine2

In case you couldn’t guess,

it’s going to be a new little Dresden plate quilt!

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-15-17

These are some of the Mini Dresden petals.

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-15-172

More Mini petals… (powered by Diet D.P.)

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-17-17

and some tiny Dresden petals waiting for me to start stitching.

We’re going to Rosemary’s this weekend, yeah for us!

Suzn+Quilts+Rosemarys+Quilt+Shop

I’m planning to get a lot of this quilt done.

I’ve already got a good start.

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-15-173

I’m using my “new” cutlery tray that Chloe bought me for my birthday.

It makes assembling little Dresden petals all the more fun.

Fun meaning I’m not looking all over for stray petals!!!

suznquiltsnewdesigns1-15-174

She also bought me a table made from an antique treadle machine

to put my “new” spool cabinet/cash wrap on.

suznquiltsnewthread-cashwrap

For now it’s in the basement (my fulfillment center)

where I plan to use it to store my shipping supplies & brochures

but who knows where it will end up?

Must get back to work!

My Life

Merry Christmas 2016

It’s my favorite time of the year;

spending time with family & friends in Jesus’ name.

My Christmas wish is that everyone gets to spend time with family & friends.

suznquiltsnativitytowelcloseup

Last week I designed a nativity for fusible applique

(for Christmas 2017 patterns).

Not a little Dresden in sight!!!

Yesterday I decided to put it onto a few towels for Christmas gifts for my family.

So, I fused the design then

cut out the shapes.

This afternoon, after finishing my Christmas shopping,

I fused then stitched them onto 6 cotton towels

(1 for my mom & dad, 5 for my siblings).

suznquiltsnativitytowels

Now to get them wrapped!

Christmas blessings to you & your families.

A Graduation Quilt for Blake

Just one short year ago we celebrated Blake’s graduation.

(I’m getting old, it seems like yesterday…)

suznquiltsblakesgraduationday

We had a party & invited Abe.

suznquiltsblakesgraduationpartyabecake

Of course we invited Abe,

Blake’s degree is in history & he is now teaching history at a local high school.

Fun was had by all…

suznquiltsblakesgraduationpartyguests

There was plenty of dessert!

suznquiltsblakesgraduationpartydesserts

A chosen few even got to help him open his gifts.

suznquiltsblakesgraduationpartygiftopening

I prepared & set out special signature blocks.

suznquiltsblakesquiltsignablock

I didn’t know what kind of quilt I would make,

but I decided the signatures would eventually be stars.

So I cut out a nice size signature area from a piece of freezer paper

& fused it onto a 6″ x 6″ piece of muslin.

I also fused a 6″ x 6″ piece of freezer paper to the back side of the

muslin so the blocks would be easier for everyone to sign.

suznquiltsblakesquiltsignhere

Eventually last summer Blake & I set to designing a quilt.

(I know, it’s the dentists’ kids who have the worst teeth…

& it’s my kids that I procrastinate making quilts for.

I’m always working on quilts for my business.)

suznquiltsblakesgraduationquiltsketches

Thanks to a chat with a friend last night I now know how to save a screen shot to a jpg so I can show you this page in my design software!

How’s that for karma?

Anyway,

we started with the stars that I would make

from the signature blocks gathered at his party;

calculating size options & quantity.

We then set to choosing fabrics.

A year ago when I decided on the stars I had envisioned using

these Nancy Gere Civil War era fabrics

that I bought at the Hickory Stick during my mom’s

& my last trip to Hannibal with all of my kids… 2009!

I know this because I dated the fabrics.

suznquiltsblakesquiltunusedfabrics

I was surprised, shocked & excited that Blake

was drawn to my vintage Thimbleberry fabrics!!!

suznquiltsblakesquiltfabrics1

suznquiltsblakesquiltfabrics2

Unfortunately for him, I did not have enough of his first choice in blue.

Just goes to show you really should buy the whole bolt of everything that you like ;)

Some of these fabrics are like 20 years old!

No doubt he’s my kid!

suznquiltsblakesquiltfabrics3

He enjoyed the designing process with me.

suznquiltsblakesquiltfabrics4

As I was pulling out fabrics from here, there & everywhere,

I remembered this George Washington print.

I got that at Paducah one year.

suznquiltsblakesquiltfabrics5

It goes perfectly with one of the background calligraphy prints

by Bonnie Sullivan from The Quilted Cottage on Main in St. Charles,

formerly Helen’s Hen House.

suznquiltsblakesquiltfabrics6

Again, who’s kid is this anyway that’s picking all my precious fabrics???

Then again, I’m going to enjoy sewing them.

So, finally, a year later…

I pulled out those signature blocks last night.

I removed the freezer paper backing, fused fusible web to them & cut out 48 stars.

suznquiltsblakesquiltstars

Today I’m ready to piece the blue background fabric for the top of the quilt.

I love the buttonhole stitch, so that’s my plan for the applique.

I’m going to need a movie for this!

Classic Metal Company Light Winners

How was your Thanksgiving?

I had just enough turkey, pie & black Friday shopping to be content!

Today I’m putting away fall &

carrying down boxes Christmas decorations.

It’s so nice out today.

So nice in fact, that when I took a package to our mailbox

I decided to start there with the Christmas decorating.

So far I have the greenery on our mailbox & my parents’ mailbox

(they live down the street)

and a couple of wooden lollipops outside as well.

When Clare gets home from work we will start making the house festive!

I hope your Thanksgiving weekend has been enjoyable too.

It’s about to get even more enjoyable for two of you!

Happy Thanksgiving 2016 & a De-Light-ful Give-Away!!!

No matter how you’re spending your Thanksgiving Day,

I hope it is enjoyable!

turkeyday2016

I wish many blessings for you and your loved ones this holiday season.

******************************

I promised a give-away this week, remember?

A while ago I contacted Mark at Classic Metal Company to let him know how much I appreciate the nice brochure I received when we bought our barn quilt a while back.

barnquilt1web

Remember me showing how it got hung up there?

suznquiltsautumnelegancegluecentertemplate

The brochure has a nice plastic surface

so I’ve used it every time I’ve glued the past 2+ years!

For those of you that know my quilting,

you know I’ve made a LOT of little Dresden plates

that each have a couple of glueing steps.

I asked if he had more brochures that I could share with my quilting friends when I ship out my templates & patterns or teach a Dresden workshop.

It’s perfect because it protects my cutting mat each time I glue,

my applique pieces don’t stick to it as they dry

& the glue doesn’t build up on it.

Mark let me know that he has a new brochure for a new item he’s now selling along with his metal barn quilts.

led_a_quilter_lives_no_text__07795-1468445419-1280-1280

Aren’t these lights cool?

You have a choice of 10 designs to light up,

and he’s working on a Dresden plate!

Along with the brochures,

he also sent me 3 of the lights along with

2 panels for each light.

suznquiltsclassicmetalcompanynightlightsx2

They’re made in the USA!

suznquiltsclassicmetalcompanynightlightsusa

He gave me 1 light to keep,

which I put in my sewing room below my ironing board.

suznquiltsaquilterliveshereclassismetalcompanynightlight

It lights up each time I sit to sew.

He also gave me 2 more to give away to 2 lucky winners on my blog.

That could be you!

Just leave me a comment telling me where you would plug the little light in if you had one.

It would make a nice night-light for you

or a great gift for a quilting friend.

I’ll draw Saturday.

Good luck!

Dresden Plates, My Life, Quilt Market

Houston 2016 International Quilt Market

I just remembered that I hadn’t posted any photos of Houston Quilt Market 2016.

Where does the time go???

houstonbooth2016

My good friend Robin, Nestlings by Robin,

graciously offered to come along as my helper.

Chloe, my booth helper the past several years (& daughter)

took a new job that started October 31, so she wasn’t able to come along this time.

She is now working in the NICU.

I hope you never need her services, but if you do, you’re in good hands!

She is also working on her doctorate to be a Family Nurse Practitioner.

I’m so proud of her!

houstonbooth20162

My quilt-as-you-go table runners/wall quilts were very popular.

houstonbooth20163

My Tiny Dresden Seasonal Series was very popular as well.

My new favorite, Dresdens on the Square…

houstonbooth20164

I love the muted colors of my booth this market.

Several Moda designers are accounted for here:

Jo Morton, 3 Sisters, Barbara Brackman & Laundry Basket to name a few.

While there, we (quickly) took in the Dear Jane exhibit.

Robin & I are contemplating making the quilt

so it was fun to browse the color combinations…

houston2016dearjanequilt1rusttriangles

houston2016dearjanequilt2reds

The reds are gorgeous, but I think I’d get tired of just using red.

houston2016dearjanequilt3blackhearts

Robin’s favorite had the black heart secondary pattern.

houston2016dearjanequilt4tealtriangles

houston2016dearjanequilt5red

houston2016dearjanequilt6noborder

Leaving off the triangle border would eliminate a lot of work!

But don’t kid yourself, there are still 169 little blocks!

houston2016dearjanequilt7golds-browns

I really like these muted colors.

houston2016dearjanequilt8grays

Interesting pattern in the gray triangle border fabric.

houston2016dearjanequilt9blues

houston2016dearjanequilt10bright

Another secondary pattern with the color placement of blocks.

houston2016dearjanequilt11bright-black

houston2016dearjanequilt12brightwatercolor

It looks so different with brights!

houston2016dearjanequilt13closecolorstoquilt

I like the rainbow of muted colors.

It’s pretty similar to the original quilt.

houston2016dearjanequilt14origcolors

Really like this one too.

houston2016dearjanequilt15origcolors

And this one.

houston2016dearjanequilt16origcolors

And this one…

houston2016dearjanequilt17

I’m still on the fence as to whether or not I’ll start this quilt.

It’s quite a commitment!

What do you think?

Want to make one with us?

We’re still trying to figure out the time-frame.

169 blocks in the center and then another 56 on the border…

225 total blocks!

Just one per week would take 4 1/3 years.

What to do???

If I make the quilt I’ve decided it will be with civil war prints.

That’s in keeping with the original quilt.

For now though, I think I’ll

A Giveaway!, Blog tour with give-aways, Dresden Plates, Mini Dresden Patterns, My Life, New ideas

Welcome to Day 1 of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 14 Blog Tour

I’m happy to finally show you my block that’s in the

newest volume of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks magazine.

Dresden Framed #1348,  is on page 35.

100blocksvol14block

It’s fun to make.

With a little bit of piecing &

a little bit of applique,

you get a beautiful Mini Dresden plate with pizzazz.

qm100-marth

I used the new “Pumpkin Pie” fabric collection by Laundry Basket quilts for Moda.

(all but the olive green which is a Jan Patek also by Moda).

I love to make little Dresden plates!

This block uses my Mini Dresden Plate template.

The paper template is included in the magazine,

but if you want the ease and accuracy of cutting 8 petals at once with a rotary cutter,

use my plastic template.

You can purchase them on my website here.

How about a pretty table runner?

 100blocks1348dresden

Make 4 blocks.

Cut 13 sashing strips 1 1/2″ x 12 1/2″.

Cut 10 corner stones 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″.

Make a 14 1/2″ x 53 1/2″ table runner.

Perhaps you’d prefer to make a lap or wall quilt.

100blocks1348dresdenwallquilt

Make 16 blocks.

Cut 40 sashing strips 1 1/2″ x 12 1/2″.

Cut 25 corner stones 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″.

Make a 53 1/2″ x 53 1/2″ quilt.

Here’s a little Dresden plate tutorial.

This block makes perfect use of 10″ layer cake squares!

This is the gorgeous “Autumn Elegance” layer cake by Sentimental Studios for Moda.

suznquiltsautumnelegancelayercake

Choose 4 squares and press them with Mary Ellen’s Best Press.

suznquiltsautumnelegancebestpresssquares

With 1 square, cut 2 strips 3 1/2″, subcut 10 petals with the template.

suznquiltsautumnelegancecutpetals

2 more petals will need to be cut the other direction from the remaining strip so be sure and use a non-directional print.

suznquiltsautumnelegancecut2morepetals

After cutting 12 petals, there will be a corner left over to cut a center circle for another plate.

suznquiltsautumnelegancecutwholesquare

Hardly any waste!

Fold each petal in half chain piecing all 12 petals using a scant 1/4″ seam.

suznquiltsautumnelegancechainsewpetals

Trim away most of the seam allowance near the fold, then press the petals flat as sewn.

suznquiltsautumnelegancetrimpresspetals

Turn them right side out, carefully poking out the points, then press them again.

suznquiltsautumneleganceturnpresspetals

A little tray helps me transport ALL of the petals to my ironing board and back again.

Chain piece the petals together in pairs, again using a scant 1/4″ seam.

suznquiltsautumnelegancesew2petals

Press the seams open, then chain sew 2 of those pairs together.

suznquiltsautumnelegancesew4petals

Press again…

suznquiltsautumnelegancepress4petals

Sew these 3 units to complete the plate,

suznquiltsautumnelegancecompleteplate

Be sure to press all of the seams open.

No trimming necessary!

Give another press with more Best Press using the single finger pump bottle.

It sprays with a fine spray that doesn’t over saturate the little pieces.

I spray both sides of the plate, but only press the back side.

suznquiltsautumnelegancecompleteplatefront

If you’ve used scant 1/4″ seam allowances your plate will lie perfectly flat.

If it doesn’t lay flat, you need to adjust your seam allowance.

Using the pattern in the magazine, cut a 2″ circle of freezer paper.

Fuse it to the wrong side of another 10″ layer cake square.

Cut out with a 3/16″ seam allowance.

suznquiltsautumnelegancefusecentercircletemplate

Glue the edge of the seam allowance with Roxanne basting glue.

suznquiltsautumnelegancegluecentertemplate

Press glued seam allowance to paper side of template.

(Notice my gluing surface?

I’ve been using this same plastic coated brochure from  Classic Metal Company for over 2 years!

I know because I bought one of their big metal barn quilts and have been using this brochure ever since.

It protects my table and my glued pieces don’t stick to it.

After all this time, it’s still like new and all I do is brush off the loose glue once in a while.

Next week I will be giving away 2 cool new products that they now have in addition to their metal barn quilts.

I’ll give you a hint; they light up!

Come back next week for those!)

suznquiltsautumneleganceglueseamallowance

Easily work out any imperfections with Apliquick bars like I show in detail here.

No clipping necessary.

suznquiltsautumneleganceperfectcircle

Voila! Perfectly round circle.

Center and glue the circle on the plate.

suznquiltsautumnelegancecentercircleonplate

Stitch the circle in place using thread that matches the circle.

I use a tiny blind hem stitch.

It resembles a hand stitch,

but it’s much quicker!

suznquiltsautumnelegancestitchcircletoplate

You can hardly see it, right?

Wet the center circle and let it rest a minute.

Remove the freezer paper through the hole in the back of the plate.

Let the plate dry.

Don’t press the wet plate, that will distort it.

While it’s drying, make the 24 half square triangles

using 2 more layer cake squares.

suznquiltsautumnelegancethangles

I like using Thangles. They’re quick and accurate.

Cut the 4 corner squares.

suznquiltsautumnhstscornersquares

Assemble the block following the instructions in the magazine.

I use the same tiny blind hem stitch to applique the plate to the center of the background square.

I got so caught up in finishing the block that I forgot to take photos of that part, sorry!

suznquiltsautumncompleteblockmovie

That may have happened because I was also listening to Little Women

& started watching when Jo came home to spend time with poor sick Beth.

Movies often keep me company while I sew.

I have a library of movies that I listen to over and over because they’re not so distracting that I can’t sew, well, usually!

Anyway,

it only takes about an hour to make one of these blocks.

(less than 1 movie!)

suznquiltsautumnblockwfallcolors

It looks lovely with my front yard’s fall colors don’t you think?

Sorry the drawing is over now.

My Life, New quilt pattern

New Patterns for You While I’m off to Houston Fall Quilt Market 2016

On one hand it seems like I’ve been working up to this moment for forever and thought it was never going to get here,

then on the other hand I can’t believe the end of October is already here.

Where did the summer go?

I spent 99% of it indoors designing, sewing and writing patterns.

I have 4 new patterns ready to go.

(Well, I’m waiting on 1 cover that experienced technical difficulty at the printer apparently, because it had to be reprinted and still has not shipped, ugh!)

When having to rely on so many people to get everything together, it’s bound to happen.

While I’m away at quilt market I thought I’d show you the new patterns,

so here goes.

Poppies

Do you remember me showing you the Mini Dresden plates in progress last summer?

Suzn+Quilts+Reds

Remember these wonderful reds?

They’re all new Modas with the exception of the far right one.

It’s my all-time favorite fabric I think & it’s from the original “Buttermilk Prints” Thimbleberries collection!

Suzn+Quilts+Field+of+red+flowers

How can you resist these?

Suzn+Quilts+stitching+red+Dresden

I was working on them with my new-to-me sewing cabinet before I got the insert for my machine. That seems like eons ago!

Suzn+Quilts+Filler+sewing

It’s 52″ x 68″.

It will make a nice lap or wall quilt.

suznquiltspoppies241coverweb

My tester, Theresa, made hers with purples.

purple-poppies

She thought the pattern was easy to follow.

She also thinks it’s the best she has ever done on a quilt.

I think it looks stunning too!

Thanks, Theresa.

I’m pretty sure this quilt will look great in any color combination.

I really like the way the corners of the block resemble an Irish chain block when they’re sewn together.

I literally cannot get enough of my little Dresden plates.

It is now available on my website for $10.00 plus shipping.

3 more new patterns to go.

Just keep sewing…
