A Giveaway!, A Quilt Along

12 Days of Christmas 2023; Day 6

I hope you enjoyed making a Dresden plate!

I love to make them, in case you haven’t noticed.

Thanks to those of you showing your 12 Days progress & also for those that commented on yesterday’s post for the Trinkets fat 1/4 bundle.

Kathryn Merrick is the winner of the Trinkets bundle.

Kathryn, please email your snail mail info so I can send you the bundle – SuznQuilts@aol.com.

On this 6th Day of Christmas, we’re going to make the letters to go with your Dresden “O”.

I used quick fusible web appliqué, but you can choose your favorite form of appliqué.

Click below to download the appliqué instructions for “HOME”.

Show us your progress on my Sewing With Susan FB page here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SewingWithSusan

Comment here what is your favorite form of appliqué. Mine is freezer paper machine appliqué in general, but for small things like these letters, fusible is easier.

I’ll be drawing for a prize!

The prize today is a 2 pack of 45 mm rotary cutter blades!

Comment here before I post Day 7 homework tomorrow & you will be entered in a drawing to win these blades for your 45 mm rotary cutter.

Just Keep Sewing,

Susan

  1. Finished edge appliqué. Most of the time, I use freezer paper, but the shapes used many times in one quilt, and basic circles, I sometimes use heat resisting plastic for repeated use.

  2. While machine applique is faster, I much prefer to applique by hand. Needle turn applique using Lori Holt’s applique needles. They are much longer and take some getting use to, but once you do they work great. AIDS in making smaller stitches.

  3. I learned how to hand appliqué while sewing Lori Holts Hometown quilt. I enjoy hand appliquéing while watching TV in the evenings. I have never tried fusible.

  4. I don’t care much for the stiffness of the fusible applique, so I usually do a finished edge–needle turn by hand if I have plenty of time, or freezer paper or turned with sew in interfacing if I’m in a hurry.

  5. I choose the method based on the purpose of the quilt. But needle turn appliqué is the most relaxing technique.
Thank you for the information and inspiration that you share in your blogs.

  6. I will reply. I always need new blades
Don’t know why I wait so lo.g to change them. Favorite applique method is needle turn but I don’t do it. I guess I’m a fuser
My 92 year old mother does needle turn every day. She is amazing. Happy New Year.

  7. My favorite is turned edge using templates and starch. I like how crisp the look is and I can glue baste prep an entire block for hand stitch traveling.

  8. Hi, I use fusible on smaller parts and the interfacing that Lori Holt taught me to use, then I usually use the buttonhole stitch on my machine. Thx,

  9. I like Lori Holt’s method for many things but I do love freezer paper and Apliquick tools for dresden centers! Such perfect circles!!

  10. I do applique with fusible the most . It’s my favorite. With a blanket stitch on my machine! Fast and easy!

  11. I love to do hand stitch appliqué. It is so relaxing and I love that it’s not “perfect” vs. machine appliqué.
