My Life

May Day & 100 Blocks Volume 5 Blog Hop too!

Happy May Day!

I remember as a child, making a May Day basket one year and filling it full of little wild violets for my mom.

Whatever happened to that tradition?

I don’t ever hear anyone speak of it, do you?

Well, this May Day, my flowers are sent to you in a quilt block!

My block
Spring Love is featured in the new Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Vol. 5.

I used a bias bar to make the heart, then fusible applique for the flowers & leaves.

I also designed a quilt using the block and that is featured in the gallery on page 22.

Just pick up Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks from today’s top designers (plus me!) Volume 5, and make the block found on page 29.

Add a 1″ purple border, then a 6-1/2″ outer border.

Add a bit more bias tubing and a few more flowers around the border and you’re set.

  1. Oh yes, it is May 1st! totally slipped by me…I love your block – sew pretty. Congratulations on being chosen for the magazine. How exciting!

  2. I used to give my mom flowers from the yard/garden on May Day when I was a kid. I don’t think kids do that any more. I’d rather get a quilting magazine than flowers myself! Thanks for the chance to win.

  3. May Day was so much fun when I was a kid! Very cute block, congrats. Of course I’m subscribed :)

  4. This is a beautiful block.. I remember making baskets from construction paper for flowers…

  5. LOVE your block. Just my kind of applique! I grew up in a small town, and we actually had a big open house at my school on “May Day” and the “BIG” 8th grade kids did a special May-pole wrap. Some how by the time I made it to 8th grade…the tradition vanished. boo… Thanks for your block.

  6. Your block is so sweet. I am a follower as well. You are right about the May Day. It is such a neat tradition that does not happen any longer. Thank you for sharing.

  7. Very pretty block! Congratulations on being included in the magazine. I receive your blog posts through email – I guess that makes me a subscriber? Thanks for a chance at winning!

  8. Your pattern will certainly be added to my collection of heart patterns! One day I plan to make a quilt with a large variety of hearts.

  9. Violets are one of my favorite wild flowers and yes I do remember picking them in small bunches for my Mom and when I see them today I still pick them to enjoy . I love your block and congratulate you for being chosen . I have signed up for your blog.

  10. I just signed up to follow your blog by email…it was easy! Look forward to hearing and reading more in the future! Thanks for the ‘extra’ chance. :)

  11. This would make a beautiful wedding quilt!

  12. I remember May Day as a Child. I got into trouble one year for picking flowers out of a neighbors garden to fill our baskets.

  13. I signed up by email. Gorgeous spring block, like the flowers and simplicity.
Blanket stitching around appliqué is one of my favorite. Can’t wait for quiltmaker issue 5
    .

  14. Love the spring daffodils or jonquils. Picture it with Christmas fabric, and they are bells!

  15. What a lovely block, I reminds me of my grandmother’s aprons. Lots of great memories there. Thanks for sharing.

  17. I remember doing the May Pole dance in elementary school and weaving in and out with long streamers of colored fabric. It was always fun to do. I think that is another tradition that has gone by the wayside.

thanks for sharing your gifts with your readers.

  18. Glad I followed the blog hop, so many beautiful designs and I love this one. I’m especially fond of hearts.
I remember picking white and blue violets and Mayflowers for my Mom, and my husband used to always pick Mayflowers for me. We moved and haven’t found any yet!! Beautiful blog site.

  24. My quilting friend and I were talking about the old May Days as children this morning after a much needed trip to buy fabric! What a lovely block you made and congratulations for being selected. Thanks for the giveaway, too.

  26. Thank you for showing me the perfect “heart” block. I have been looking for what seems like forever for a “heart” block that I really like to finish a quilt that has been in my UFO box for years. Can’t wait to get the magazine to finish the quilt.

  27. Congratulations on getting your block in volume 5. It is a lovely block and a sweet quilt.

  28. You’re right that rarely do I ever hear about anyone celebrating May Day any longer. Such a shame that many of these special things from our childhood are being lost with this next generation. Makes me sad really.

But, in happier things, I really love your block and how great that I just purchased some bias bars about a month ago or so.

  29. I am now subscribed to your blog as well. I thought I might have been a subscriber already but I got no warning when I did just now so possibly not. Oh well. I am now.

  30. The block is pretty, and adding the frame for a simple wall quilt is really great! Love the idea.

  31. I love this block it brings back so many memories. I lived near a woods growing up and loved to take walks in the woods looking at all the wild flowers.

  32. Gosh, I haven’t seen wild violets in years! But one of the neighbor girls did leave me a may day basket of wildflowers (mostly dandelions!)

  33. Oh, this is really a lovely block. I love applique and can’t wait to try it. Congratulations!

  34. Congratulations on your selection for QM 100 Blocks v5. We never celebrated May Day. Your block is lovely.

  36. What a pretty block and applique is my forte. Thanks for putting it in and congratulations on being in Volume 5.

  37. Your block is very beautiful. I love applique and this block is one I would love to make. Congratulations and thanks so much for the giveaway.

  38. I remember May Baskets! We would take a Dixie cup and afix a pipecleaner to it for a handle, decorate it and fill it with candies. Only the best of friends would get one, for my parents were very sparse on candy purchases!

  39. Happy May Day! We did a Maypole when I was very young in school and it was so much fun! I subscribed to your blog! Congratulations on having your cute block chosen! Can’t wait to get my hands on volume 5!

  40. Just love your block! Definitely shows your creative side.
Thank you for offering this giveaway.

  41. Love your block – I, too, made May baskets once upon a time and even danced around a May pole; Your block would make a great May basket gift.

  42. I made May Day baskets as a kid, and with my kids but now that they are grown and gone I haven’t done that in years. Fun memories. Thanks for the chance at your giveaway.

  43. What a lovely block! I remember popping pop corn and putting M&M’s in construction paper cones – pipecleaners for handles and hung on doors followed by a quick door bell ring and the RUN!!!jj What fun! You’d come home to find a dozen that came while you were out.

  44. Love your block, I’ve never heard of that May Day tradition. larmenti at bellsouth dot net

  45. What a sweet block. May baskets–wow, I vaguely recall making them in grade school, way back when……

  46. Everytime someone speaks of May baskets I think of my aunt Ginney(deceased), who always made May baskets and took them around and put them on peoples door handles and rang their bells or knocked on their doors and ran away so they would not see them. She did this as a kid growing up. I love your square and the quilt that you did.

  47. Very pretty block! I remember making may baskets as a kid – hanging them on the doorknobs of friends, ringing the doorbell, and then running away lest I get kissed.

  48. May Day Festival…dance around the pole…. flower baskets not what it used to be, especially living in the urban environments these days. The applique is neat. congrats & thanks.

  49. I’m an appliquer, so I love your block. Thanks for the opportunity to win one of the giveaways. Congrats on being in the Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks this year.

  50. How cute! I like the simple quilt you turned it into!
Your May Day thoughts, with Mother’s Day around the corner, reminded me of a sweet children’s song in my church, that I learned as a child: “I often go walking, in meadows of clover, and I gather armfuls of blossoms of blue. I gather the armfuls the whole meadow over; Dear Mother, all flowers remind me of you.”
reillyr2@hotmail.com. I subscribed to your email list, too. I would love Luck of the Irish, Old Glory, or A Pretty Plate.

  51. Pretty block especially for May Day. I remember the May Day baskets they were always fun to give out.

  52. I can see your block as a small wall hanging. So cute and original. Thanks for the chance to win.

  53. What a great block for springtime! I have fond memories of making little baskets of treats to give to friends on May day. Thanks for reminding me of those days gone by. I already am a subscriber of your blog.

  54. I love love love how you turned this into a quilt! Thank you for the ideas and can’t wait to see the book! Hope I win!!!

  55. I think that tradition has disappeared and been supplanted by Mother’s Day. One meant gathering blossoms on your own, the second has become another big “spending money” day. But, that’s OK, too, especially if you BUY LOCAL and support your hometown merchants/crafters/growers.

  56. What a lovely design! When I was little, most of our neighbors were elderly, and my mother would help me make little paper baskets, raid her rose garden to fill them, and walk me to hang them on the neighbors’ door knobs. It was a fun tradition…I hope it gets revived!

  57. Your block is so delightful and is reminiscent of the May Days of old!
I signed up to follow your fantastic blog and look forward to seeing your future quilted treasures *Ü*

  58. I used to make May Day baskets with my mom, and then deliver them to the older ladies in the neighborhood. Thanks for the sweet memories.
