Happy May Day!
I remember as a child, making a May Day basket one year and filling it full of little wild violets for my mom.
Whatever happened to that tradition?
I don’t ever hear anyone speak of it, do you?
Well, this May Day, my flowers are sent to you in a quilt block!
My block
Spring Love is featured in the new Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Vol. 5.
I used a bias bar to make the heart, then fusible applique for the flowers & leaves.
I also designed a quilt using the block and that is featured in the gallery on page 22.
Just pick up Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks from today’s top designers (plus me!) Volume 5, and make the block found on page 29.
Add a 1″ purple border, then a 6-1/2″ outer border.
Add a bit more bias tubing and a few more flowers around the border and you’re set.

I used to give my mom flowers from the yard/garden on May Day when I was a kid. I don’t think kids do that any more. I’d rather get a quilting magazine than flowers myself! Thanks for the chance to win.

LOVE your block. Just my kind of applique! I grew up in a small town, and we actually had a big open house at my school on “May Day” and the “BIG” 8th grade kids did a special May-pole wrap. Some how by the time I made it to 8th grade…the tradition vanished. boo… Thanks for your block.

Violets are one of my favorite wild flowers and yes I do remember picking them in small bunches for my Mom and when I see them today I still pick them to enjoy . I love your block and congratulate you for being chosen . I have signed up for your blog.

I remember May Day as a Child. I got into trouble one year for picking flowers out of a neighbors garden to fill our baskets.

I remember doing the May Pole dance in elementary school and weaving in and out with long streamers of colored fabric. It was always fun to do. I think that is another tradition that has gone by the wayside.

Hearts and flowers…nothing is better!
Thank you for showing me the perfect “heart” block. I have been looking for what seems like forever for a “heart” block that I really like to finish a quilt that has been in my UFO box for years. Can’t wait to get the magazine to finish the quilt.

You’re right that rarely do I ever hear about anyone celebrating May Day any longer. Such a shame that many of these special things from our childhood are being lost with this next generation. Makes me sad really.
But, in happier things, I really love your block and how great that I just purchased some bias bars about a month ago or so.

The block is pretty, and adding the frame for a simple wall quilt is really great! Love the idea.
I love this block it brings back so many memories. I lived near a woods growing up and loved to take walks in the woods looking at all the wild flowers.

I remember May Baskets! We would take a Dixie cup and afix a pipecleaner to it for a handle, decorate it and fill it with candies. Only the best of friends would get one, for my parents were very sparse on candy purchases!

What a lovely block! I remember popping pop corn and putting M&M’s in construction paper cones – pipecleaners for handles and hung on doors followed by a quick door bell ring and the RUN!!!jj What fun! You’d come home to find a dozen that came while you were out.

Everytime someone speaks of May baskets I think of my aunt Ginney(deceased), who always made May baskets and took them around and put them on peoples door handles and rang their bells or knocked on their doors and ran away so they would not see them. She did this as a kid growing up. I love your square and the quilt that you did.

I think that tradition has disappeared and been supplanted by Mother’s Day. One meant gathering blossoms on your own, the second has become another big “spending money” day. But, that’s OK, too, especially if you BUY LOCAL and support your hometown merchants/crafters/growers.

What a lovely design! When I was little, most of our neighbors were elderly, and my mother would help me make little paper baskets, raid her rose garden to fill them, and walk me to hang them on the neighbors’ door knobs. It was a fun tradition…I hope it gets revived!
