A Giveaway!, A Quilt Along

12 Days of Christmas 2023; Day 5

Are YOU working as hard on your Dresden Home as Emma has been to show it to you?

Thanks to those of you showing your 12 Days progress & also for those that commented on yesterday’s post for the 1/2 yd. bundle of blacks & creams.

Rita Herzberger is the winner of that bundle!

Rita, I hope you’re enjoying your trip!

Please email your snail mail info so I can send you the bundle – SuznQuilts@aol.com.

On this 5th Day of Christmas, we’re going to make my favorite, a Tiny Dresden!

This is another pic where Tamara’s quilting really shows up.

As I mentioned in the fabric list,

you could make this TD with 1 red fabric,

but that’s no fun!

3 is fun!

Tip for making FLAT Dresdens – make sure you’re sewing a scant 1/4″ seam THE ENTIRE length of the seam. When your seam allowance isn’t consistent, you’ll either have a “bowl” (because the center of your plate’s seams are too big) or a “mountain” (because the center of your plate’s seams are too small). If your plate isn’t flat, turn it over & examine the seams.

Another tip – spray & iron your fabrics with Mary Ellen’s Best Press. These are all bias edges & they’re being put through your machine over & over so it’s easy to distort them.

Have fun!

Comment here whether you like adding as many fabrics as you can to a quilt, like I do, or if you prefer a minimal pallet.

I’ll be drawing for a prize!

The prize today is more fabric!

16 fat 1/4s of Trinkets by Kathy Hall for Andover Fabrics.

That’s 4 yards of fabric!

Comment here before I post Day 6 homework tomorrow & you will be entered in a drawing to win this fabric for your next quilt.

Just Keep Sewing,

Susan

  1. Actually, I let the pattern tell me if it wants to be scrappy or have a limited pallet, because I make both. Thanks.

  2. More the merrier. Probably because I am not into the modarn stuff at all. Even the same color, different prints give different textures and depth in colors.

  3. I like adding many fabrics to quilts. The color assortment in the pictured fabrics is stunning! Like how the reds blend in your dresden plate–looking forward to using this tool for a demo with sewing friends.

  4. It depends on the pattern as to how many fabrics I work with. But, I may make it twice to try a different color pallet.

  5. I like using different colors especially from my scrap stash-which is what I’m doing for this project. I love it!!

  6. I prefer a set palate. I am not good at “letting go”. If I have specific directions for what color where, I’m all for it. I just can’t be scrappy. I try, but my inner demons won’t let me. 😉

  7. I like different colors in some projects and in others I focus more on just a few colors or maybe just two. I love the little Dresdens and the trees.

  8. I like many prints with a single constant other than a neutral background when it is an all over patterned quilt.

  9. Most of the time I fall in love with a pattern because of the color pallet used on the cover so I usually stick to that. I do have several pattern books that are scrappy minded.

    1. Many can’t see past the colors on the covers. Sometimes I can & other times I can’t. I do like to see how others change fabrics on my patterns. Sometimes I like other quilters’ choices better than mine! lol

  10. Picked up a grey fabric at Itchn to be StitchN and I noticed the lady checking out in front of me was collecting her fabrics and tiny tree templates. Looks like there are a lot of quilters joining in on this sew along. Thanks.
