My Life, New Moda Fabric Collection

Morris Earthly Paradise Blooming

I couldn’t resist showing you the beautiful garden that came to life

as I opened the Morris Earthly Paradise fat quarter bundle!

Moda & Barbara have done it again.

Suzn+Quilts+Yummy+Morris+Group+opened

Wow, the color!

Now before you freak out that I have cupcakes in my yummy Morris garden…

anyone that knows me knows there’s NO EATING in my sewing atelier!

Have no fear, they’re resin &

a gift from my sister along with an antique muffin tin.

Perhaps that will find its way into a photo someday too.

 Suzn+Quilts+Yummy+Morris+Group+opened+2

I separated out the prints that will read as solids.

Suzn+Quilts+Yummy+Morris+Group+opened+3

My favorite is in the front of the drawer.

I think every color in the collection is in that piece (big surprise it’s my favorite right?).

Suzn+Quilts+Yummy+Morris+Group+opened+4

A nice variety of scale and color.

Suzn+Quilts+Yummy+Morris+Group+opened+5

Yummy, don’t you think?

Suzn+Quilts+Yummy+Morris+Group+opened+6

The variety will all look nice in Tiny Dresden petals which is why I chose this collection.

I can’t wait to start sewing so I can show you the finished quilt.

Please do not hold your breath though.

Some quilts are marathons, not sprints!

Just keep sewing…

New Fabric Line – Morris Earthly Paradise

Several months ago I received the new Moda line by Barbara Brackman,

Morris Earthly Paradise.

Suzn+Quilts+Morris+Group+2

 It is truly lovely!

Suzn+Quilts+Morris+Group+close+2

I ordered one print along with the fat quarters.

Suzn+Quilts+Morris+Group+black+print+close

A charming black.

Suzn+Quilts+Morris+Group+close

Beautifully reproduced William Morris floral prints

in gorgeous colors and black!

Suzn+Quilts+Morris+Group+thanks+Barbara+close

While William Morris is probably better know for his textiles & literary works,

I first learned of the famous William Morris while in college through

his involvement in the Arts & Crafts movement

and the extremely popular Morris chair.

More than a century later, it’s still sought after and being reproduced today!

A Morris Chair

It would be fun to draft this!

My grandparents had an antique version of the reclining chair & I actually have an Arts & Crafts style rocking chair in my living room that I acquired from a friend of the family’s estate.

Why am I attracted to old things?

Notice my new-to-me old mini chest of drawers?

Don’t be jealous.

Get out and go to some estate sales & flea markets!

Suzn+Quilts+Morris+Group+backgrounds

I’ve added some background fabrics from my stash for my quilt.

I need to get cutting!

Will it surprise you to learn that I’m going to be cutting little Dresden petals???

This collection is available in quilt shops now and Barbara has a quilt-along

Morris Hexathon

going on with her fabrics.

You can learn more about the collection by joining her on her blog, Material Culture.

Just keep sewing…

New Fabric- Preservation

The 4th and final collection that I have to show you is Moda’s new “Quilt for a Cause” collection,

Preservation.Suzn+Quilts+PerservationPreservation is 19th in their “Quilt for a Cause” series.

The collection was inspired by a quilt from England dating to 1830.

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+quilt+for+a+cause+light

It will benefit the

International Quilt Study Center & Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska

which is a learning center.

They have a collection of quilts,

related textiles and documents

for the purpose of study, insight and inspiration.

Perhaps you’ve been there?

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+fat+quarters

Glad to know such a good cause will benefit from the sale of these lovely fabrics!

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+fat+quarters+2

The colors are lovely!

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+fat+quarters+close

I love it when collections mix the all the colors of the collection in all or most all the fabrics.

It makes for a low contrast quilt which I find very appealing.

The colors blend from one fabric to the next.

I used a similar collection for Dresden Heaven.

Suzn+Quilts+Dresden+Heaven#230+RGB

This pattern is available here on my website.

Low contrast, making it very calming to look at.

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+fat+quarters+3Notice the aqua fabrics have red and cream,

the red fabrics have the cream, aqua and brown,

the cream fabrics have the aqua, red, brown…

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+quilt+for+a+cause

You can see the complete collection at Moda by going here.

Preservation

Preservation is due in quilt shops in September.

You have plenty of time to sew up some of your stash to make room for it.

So, GO QUILT!

I will too!

New Moda Fabric Collection

New Fabric-Gratitude

I’ve loved Jo Morton’s fabric for years, how about you?

I was so excited to hear she was designing for Moda because her fabrics with Anodover are hard to find around here.

Now that she’s with Moda I’ll have a better chance of finding them and hopefully you will too.

Meet Gratitude, due in quilt shops in August.

Suzn+Quilts+Gratitude

A bit reminiscent of Civil War prints and colors.

Suzn+Quilts+Gratitude+fat+quarters

Jo’s newest muted, small prints for Moda.

Jo+Morton

Lots of yummy pinks and browns.

Suzn+Quilts+Gratitude+yummy+colors

There are other colors in the collection, but I didn’t order them!

Suzn+Quilts+Gratitude+fat+quarters+2

I have to say I sure wish she had put some black in the collection.

Her blacks have been my favorites for years!

This is “Simplify”, of my quilt-as-you-go lap quilt patterns using  Jo’s black fabrics.

Suzn+Quilts+Simplify+pattern+cover

I still love those big gold stars.

And these are some of her blacks from my stash.

Suzn+Quilts+Jo+Morton+blacks

Yes, some are quite old, but I still love them.

They still reside in my stash, even passing the test of last week’s guild yard sale.

You’ll know I’ve lost my will to live when you see me put these in the “get rid of” pile!

I also used one of her blacks in every pattern in my “In Season” series.

Suzn+Quilts+In+Season+Quilts

I’m sure she’ll have a black in her next collection though, just for me!

How can I be sad about these, right?

Suzn+Quilts+Gratitude+2

And yes, I have a design all picked out for them with, you guessed it

Dresdens!

And now I MUST-GO-SEW!

New Moda Fabric Collection

New Fabric-Fern Hill

Today’s post comes to you from Fern Hill.

Suzn+Quilts+Fern+Hill+Collection-2

It’s Jan Patek’s new collection by Moda.

This collection is due in quilt shop in September.

Big surprise right; red, green, cream?

Am I redundant or what?

Suzn+Quilts+Fern+Hill+coordinates

These two remind me of the 1930’s, 1940’s kitchen accessories that I see from time to time.

They’d make cute cobbler aprons like my grandma used to make for my mom and aunts when I was little. When I look back at those aprons I’m amazed at how well she put the binding on them. I don’t know if she used a special foot or if that was just “her thing”, but she did a wonderful job.

Suzn+Quilts+Fern+Hill+Fern

The only thing I wish about this collection is that the navy prints were black instead, but I’ll forgive her this time since her last collection had black.

If you remove the greens from the collection it would make nice patriotic quilts too. I plan to do something with that thought in mind.

See, there are even some of her signature star prints.

Suzn+Quilts+Fern+Hill+Stars

The navy prints are nice, just not my thing!

fern hill

But those reds, greens & creams… and the big green floral print…

 Suzn+Quilts+Fern+Hill+Hill

Like Pumpkin Pie that I showed you yesterday, I already have a quilt in mind for these fabrics too.

Can’t wait to cut into these for sure.

Must get back to work!

Just keep sewing…

Flea markets & antiquing, New Moda Fabric Collection, New tiny Dresden plate quilts, restocking stash

Fabric, Fabric & More Fabric

It’s ALWAYS fun to get new fabric, right?

It’s especially fun when I already have designs in mind to make with it.

Rest assured there will be Dresden petals involved; Tiny & Mini!

Last week I received two boxes from Moda because I have a lot of sewing to do!

Fall market will be here before I know it.

I’m in the middle of writing pattern instructions so I would not allow myself to do anything but put the boxes in my sewing room and walk around them…

…my little plan devised to keep me on task.

Suzn+Quilts+Moda+boxes

I may have mentioned before that I love fabric???

Once? Twice? Maybe 3 million times?

You thought I loved to quilt, but really I only quilt so that my family does not die in a fabric avalanche around here.

Today I finally opened the boxes and took a peek

because I have nothing better to do I’m taking a break and I don’t want to start back to writing instructions…

This it LOTS MORE FUN!Suzn+Quilts+Pumpkin+PieThis is Pumpkin Pie

by Laundry Basket quilts for Moda.

Pumpkin+Pie

They’ll be available in quilts shops this fall.

Suzn+Quilts+Pumpkin+Pie+yardage

Look, there’s black & pink & aqua

Suzn+Quilts+Pumpkin+Pie+quarters

& pretty floral prints…

Suzn+Quilts+Pumpkin+Pie+thanks+layout

I’m looking forward to sewing with these.

The small prints will make great Tiny & Mini Dresden petals.

Suzn+Quilts+Pumpkin+Pie+thanks

Notice my “new” letter squares?

I may have mentioned in a post not too long ago that I also have a thing for estate sales…

I found them recently.

They came in this cool old vintage Famous Barr box.

Suzn+Quilts+Letters+Fabous+Barr++boxe The box is extremely sturdy, but…

I was at Goodwill last week and found this treasure.

Suzn+Quilts+Jar+Goodwill

It’s the perfect size to hold them all.

And it was just a dollar!

It’s the little things…

I know, crazy aren’t I?

Aren’t you glad you don’t have MY brain???

Now that I’ve shown you part of my new fabric I must get back to work.

More to come later, after I’ve done some more real work.

I hope you’re enjoying this hot summer weather like I am.

I’ll take 100 degrees over 0 any day!

Just keep sewing…

Laboring on Labor Day

As it often does, my quilt piecing ironing board cover had become thread bare.

Then frustration hit hard when I realized I could no longer just run to

Walmart, Target, K-Mart, Home Depot, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Big Lots, JoAnn’s, Deals, Lowe’s

(those are the stores that I checked)

& buy a counter top ironing board cover with a silicone coating that would last more than 5 minutes in my sewing room…

I finally decided to buy some silicone coated fabric & make my own.

I found that at JoAnn’s thankfully.

So, yesterday I recovered my ironing board.

Suzn+Quilts+new+ironing+bd+cover

See?  Shiny & new!

I also have a spare since the fabric is wide enough to get two from a yard.

While I was at it, I did another housekeeping task & replaced my rotary cutter blade.

Suzn+Quilts+new+blade

Then I set to cutting these beautiful new fabrics from my friends at Moda.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Fabrics9-6-15

This is actually a couple of collections,

Mille Coulores by 3 sisters &

Alice’s Scrap Bag by Barbara Brackman.

I’m working on a new sampler pattern with my Tiny & Mini Dresden plates.

Surprised???

I did a bit of sewing & made this pretty pile yesterday.

Suzn+Quilts+Pile+of+petals

Then I did some trimming & pressing & made these pretty stacks.

Suzn+Quilts+Tiny+Dresden+Petals+9-7-15

Then more sewing & pressing & made these.

Suzn+Quilts+Tiny+Dresdens+wo+centers9-7-15

I’m in love…  The beginning of a pretty tiny garden.

Did you do any laboring in your sewing room today? I hope so!

Dresden Plate Quilt, New lap quilt pattern, New Moda Fabric Collection, New Pattern Sample, quilt as you go lap quilt

New Patterns-Spring 2015-Dresden Trellis

Another new pattern incorporating my Tiny Dresden & Mini Dresden plates,

surprised aren’t you?

This quilt also incorporates my unique Quilt-as-you-go technique.

Meet Dresden Trellis.

Suzn+Quilts+Dresden+Trellis+Cover+RGB

I never get tired of designing & making these lap quilts.

Know why???

They’re quick & easy of course!

I’ve added applique to the borders,

applique that uses my Tiny  Dresden & Mini Dresden petals…

in a nontraditional way!

There is a full-size applique sheet to align the stems perfectly!

Like Garden Romance,

the stems are made easily with Clover’s fusible bias tape maker.

It was also made with

Collections+Mill+1892

Moda’s Mill Book 1892.

Any questions?

Pattern is now on my website if you can’t find it at your favorite quilt shop.

One more new pattern to show you.

Just keep sewing,

Well, this is what I was working on, Summer Blooms.

Suzn+Quilts+Summer+Blooms+cover+RGB

Summer Blooms continues the theme of incorporating my

Tiny Dresden & Mini Dresden plates in nontraditional ways.

I fractured the mini Dresden plates &

inserted a square in the center of them.

Fun, huh?

I think so.

All piecing, all the time!

I forgot to mention in my last post & it stands true for this quilt as well,

100% sewn by machine.

The only hand work I did on this & on Garden Romance is stitching the binding down.

I use a tiny blind hem stitch to applique the Dresden plates.

This quilt was also made using the new

Collections+Mill+1892

Mill Book 1892 by Moda.

Summer Blooms can now be found on my website if your favorite shop isn’t carrying it yet.

Just keep sewing,

New Patterns-Spring 2015-Garden Romance

I have new patterns & they’re ready to ship!

All but one have a common theme;

they incorporate both my Tiny Dresden Template

Tiny+Dresden+template & my Mini Dresden Template.

Suzn+Quilts+Mini+Dresden+Plate+Template+insert+front+11-24-14

First is Garden Romance.

Suzn+Quilts+Garden+Romance+Cover+RGB

I’m having a lot of fun using the very traditional

Dresden Plate templates & making nontraditional quilts!

Have you noticed this theme???

That’s me, the “rule breaker” living on the edge…

When I introduced these at Quilt Market in Minneapolis last month,

it was fun watching some shop owners process the fact that these are “Dresden Plates.”

Yep, you don’t have to sew 12 Dresden petals into a circle,

then applique a circle to their centers, really!!!

This quilt was a lot of fun to design & make.

I used the new “Mill Book 1892” collection by Moda.

Collections+Mill+1892

Along with Dresden petals,

I also used Clover’s fusible bias tape maker to quickly & easily make the vines.

I’m all about quick & easy.

You may not make this quilt in a day, but each step is easy.

Full-size illustrations are included to help you lay out the vines perfectly so they all match.

Paper Dresden templates are included in the pattern,

but you’ll want to use the plastic templates for quicker, more accurate cutting.

If you don’t see Garden Romance at your local quilt shop,

you can find it here.

More new patterns to follow.

Just keep sewing,

Susan
