Sewing Room Update

Last winter my friend, Susan, turned me onto EstateSales.net.

estate sales net

Heard of them?

If you go to their website you can see estate sale listings in your area.

If I were you I would stop there.

Whatever you do, DON’T,

I repeat DON’T,

sign up for their email notifications of sales in your area.

They’ll ask you to put in a number for the mileage radius you’re interested in.

If you do this, they keep nagging you about sales;

when they open, when they close, and they show photos too, sometimes in the hundreds!!!

Don’t look! Please, don’t look!

I’m warning you because I did this.

Two weeks ago I was minding my own business on a Thursday morning, just getting ready to get back to sewing after eating my breakfast and remembered that I had received a reminder of a sale less than 10 minutes from my house the day before. (They give you advance warning so you can plan your schedule around them.) Nothing piqued my interest in the photos so I wrote off going.

It was a dreary day & I didn’t feel like minding my own business…

I wasn’t going to go, I needed to get back to work,

but no one was here to tell me “get to work” so I went.

I found a few old treasures for my history-major son.

Who knew you could acquire flags that have been flown over your state capitol?

I didn’t think much about the specific dates this particular flag was flown until I gave it to my son, it came with an official document.

As we were discussing it, I was reminded that it was the summer we had moved when I was young …and the summer ELVIS DIED!

Too bad, it flew the week after he died. If you’re an Antique’s Roadshow fanatic like me, you’ll know if you have multiple interested groups in something the value automatically goes up, darn! Day late and a dollar short as my mom always says.

Well, it probably flew during his funeral. (lol…)

Blake will enjoy hanging it in his history classroom.

I took one more look in the garage that I walked through to get into the nice home and stumbled upon something I wasn’t in the market for.

It was labeled as a desk & I had no need for a desk.

As I looked a bit closer I knew it wasn’t a desk. It had cut-outs for sewing machines in two different tables that could be screwed together by a third corner piece, making an “L” shaped unit.

I thought a bit more…it was like new…

I debated for quite a while,

then, knowing I had the ability to haul it home,

I bought it!

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Tables+in+VanI keep old quilts in my van “just in case” I need packing material.

It was tough, but I waited for someone to come home to help me unload.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Tables+w+Nemo

Nemo is a good companion & model, but not so much help at lending a hand…

& Dori, she was just busy exploring what else I might have brought home for her.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+TableS+Dori+Too

Well, that was the easy part, getting it home.

In case you don’t know me, I’m quite the creature of habit.

I like what I have, that’s why I have it.

I wasn’t looking for nor did I think I “needed” new sewing furniture,

but somehow I knew it was meant to be.

I wasn’t even in line at the sale when it opened for goodness sake.

It should have been gone by the time I got there since it was such a great find.

That evening was the big senior farewell orchestra concert so I had to let it be for the night.

The next day I emptied out my sewing room.

Suzn+Quilts+empty+sewing+room

For those of you that have been to our house,

YES, this REALLY is my sewing room.

There is a wood floor in there!!!

Suzn+Quilts+empty+sewing+room+2With a pretty green & pink floral rug.

Recognize the quilt on the wall?

Now you believe me, right?

It took me about an hour to get everything out of room

and 10 seconds later I was moving the pieces in.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Table+Config+1

Yeah, they’re on wheels!

I knew right away I was not going to use the corner computer table so it went to the basement for future configurations like when we move to the mansion and my sewing room is 50′ x 50′, ha,ha.

I actually contemplated moving to the basement, but it’s too cold down there.

I would hate it!

And I’m pretty sure my DH wouldn’t want to move my wonderful light.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Table+Config+2

I had fun moving the two tables and Betsy, my helper, around the room.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Table+Config+8

My sewing room has evolved over the years.

It’s actually our “dining room.”

You better not be caught eating in there!!!

When we built our house 24 years ago we didn’t have any dining room furniture so the dining room sat empty until our first child was born a month to the day after we moved in.

First I put the baby swing in there and then the playpen then as I started learning to quilt, my sewing machine went in there… eventually we didn’t need a swing or playpen

and the rest as they say “is history!”

It’s been perfect because I could watch the kids, cook and be in the middle of everything while I sewed because the room is open to the rest of the house.

This is where I “live” all day, every day

except when I’m cooking or doing other less useful things, or sleeping.

(or going to estate sales)

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Table+Config+7

The drawer unit is actually a separate piece of furniture that slides under the top drawer that is part of the 5′ table, slick! I’m not used to drawers, so I’m still trying to decide what to put in them.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Table+Config+9

Soon I decided the 5′ cabinet was too big for the middle window.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Table+Config+3

Since the 5′ cabinet has a fold out table, perhaps here?

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Table+Config+4

But, I send my quilts out for quilting so I probably would not use this feature.

That’s when I decided since the smaller table also has a machine cut-out I could sew on it

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Table+Config+6

and use the 5′ table as my new cutting table.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Table+Config+5

I decided to face the drawer unit out, so I could access it easier.

I still needed an ironing table at my right

so I brought my little desk back in.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Tables+DECISION+MADE

It’s white too so it matches perfectly.

So, my machine is where it has been for the past however many years, but now it sits in a pretty white table.Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Tables+Cutting+TableI have a little bit wider but shorter cutting table with “real” storage underneath.

Suzn+Quilts+New+Sewing+Tables+Cutting+Table+2

Plus the ability for a friend to come & sew with me if I move the cutting mat.

(But you better come quick. I don’t know how long it will last before I start filling it so full it won’t be easily evacuated by all my sewing junk good stuff!)

The only thing left was to order a new filler so the openings will fit my Bernina 930.

I hope to have that very soon, can’t wait…

I’m sewing anyway, it’s just a little inconvenient with the opening as it is.

Just keep sewing!

When my sewing room is engulfed in sunshine,

I just can’t bear to stay away, ahhhhhhhhhh.

This morning I’m stitching centers.

Recognize the OLD Thimbleberries red???

When I decided on these beautiful new Moda reds from

Barbara Brackman, Betsy Chuchian, & Kathy Schmitz,

I needed one more & I happened to notice

my most favorite fabric ever matched perfectly!

Suzn+Quilts+Reds

It’s from Lynette’s Buttermilk Collection.

20+ years old & still beautiful!

I guess we can now call it vintage.

I picked it off my Thimbleberries cart.

Family Time, My Life, quilt as you go lap quilt

Anabelle’s Baby Quilt

Another new baby is on the way

& you know what that means, right?

Time to pull this out again:

SuznQuilts+NameThatQuilt+Book

Usually I beat myself up because I think of things after the fact… a bit too late… hindsight is 20/20…

but not this time!

I’m so proud of myself for having the insight to predict this next generation of babies coming close together & me not having the time & energy to decide on a quilt much less make it.

Remember Lucy’s quilt & Hadleigh’s quilt?

I’m sure you’ve heard the story time & again too of that baby quilt someone is still trying to finish by the child’s 3rd birthday!

Well, not me, at least not yet.

Anabelle’s mom (my niece) gave me fabric colors way back in January at my birthday party

& sent me this image of the nursery items they had decided on.

Jojo-Designs-Princess-11-Piece-Baby--pTRU1-17780660dtSweet, huh?

Their furniture is dark not like all the white shown in this Babies r Us image.

I chose these fabrics:

Suzn+Quilts+Anabelle+quilt+fabrics

I thought they were extra girly & had the same feel as the nursery set.

The hardest part of this quilt (& nothing is hard about it)

is centering the letters in a fun way.

AND double, triple, quadruple checking the spelling!

  Suzn+Quilts+Anabelle+quilt+letters

By the way,

I discovered the “Big Board” & I love it.

If you remember, here for instance I show you how I use layers of towels to press the whole width of quilt at once?

Well, the big board is big enough to press the whole width of quilt at once too & since I had it out anyway…

While on our retreat at Rosemary’s this year we used one. More than one of us could press at once.

Suzn+Quilts+Rosemarys+big+board

I love the height & the way she incorporated storage into her base.

I need to buy some of the silicone coated fabric for mine.

It will be more durable than the muslin it came wrapped in.

It has gotten really scorched with the heavy usage the last couple of months.

Anyway,

We had the baby shower Saturday & I’m happy to say, Heather LOVED the quilt!

Suzn+Quilts+Anabelle+quilt+n+Heather

 She was too funny.

When she read the card from me she knew what was inside the package.

She had been anticipating the quilt & was very curious what I’d done with her suggested colors.

I’m was touched that it meant so much to her.

She is going to use the quilt so I gave her washing instructions.

It’s all cotton & very durable so machine washing & drying will be just fine.

I made Clare nervous Wednesday when I asked her to help me spray baste the foundation.

She couldn’t believe I hadn’t made the quilt yet!

Ha! It only takes a few hours.

Any babies in your future?

You can buy your own book here.

It comes with instructions for both the baby & lap size quilts

along with the whole alphabet which is reversed & ready to trace.

Now, we get to wait for Anabelle.

Just keep sewing!

Chloe’s Graduation Quilt Finish

With Blake’s graduation party on the horizon I was determined to I finish up Chloe’s graduation quilt.

Remember me showing you?

Suzn+Quilts+Red+cross+fabric+perfection

I already had a spot reserved on my quilter’s list way back last summer for sometime in December, so it worked out perfectly that I was able to finish it up in time.

I got it back from my quilter two nights before Blake’s graduation party just before Christmas & sat down to bind it soon after but I was a bit too busy to instigate a post.

I was excited to be able to show it to our guests that had signed the blocks at Chloe’s party & to give it to her by Christmas.

Chloe+grad+quilt+2-29-16

I really liked the way it all came together after I finally decided on a fabric theme & design.

I love the little nurse caps & the colors look great in her apartment wherever she decides to put it.

I used the EQ Printables for the image in the middle of the quilt.

Suzn+Quilts+EQ+Printables+fabric+sheets

These are great!

The image is so clear!

Just put the prepared fabric right into your printer like a piece of paper & print.

Next trim the image, keeping the scant 1/4” seam allowance in mind.

I then sewed it into the quilt just like every other piece of fabric.

The hardest part was figuring the sizes to cut the triangles to frame the image which wasn’t hard at all.

The quilt isn’t overly huge, so it can be hung on a wall or draped somewhere.

I’m glad to have it finished especially now that I have a new one on my to-do list!

I did the same thing for Blake’s party, but since he is a history major, his quilt will be patriotic in theme.

(I think, but time will tell…)

Suzn+Quilts+Blake+signature+blocks

I have the fabrics & the signed pieces

now I just need time & inspiration to collide!

Doing anything fun?

I hope so.

Just keep sewing!

Rosemary’s 2016

It’s another January

which mean’s another quilt retreat to Rosemary’s!

Suzn+Quilts+Rosemarys+Quilt+Shop

In case you don’t remember, Rosemary’s is a quilt shop in Highland, IL.

Rosemary has a retreat center that consists of sleeping quarters & a sewing room with lots of authentic restaurants within a couple blocks; Chinese, Italian & Mexican to name our favorites, but there are many more.

A great weekend spent with good friends

(at least the ones that didn’t have family obligations to tend to)

& no cooking or cleaning.

Loraine must have been shopping during this one…

It may appear that I bought the same polka dot fabric twice, but Rosemary & I were a bit chatty & weren’t paying attention to her measuring; a side affect of being in good company!

It’s OK, I’m going to cut it into little pieces just to sew it back together anyway.

(crazy!?!?!?)

I have never chosen a word for the year.

I don’t know how I could concentrate on just one word for 365 days when my life is SO full!

Blake’s a history major, ready to go out into the would and shape the minds of our youth.

Know anyone looking for a history teacher?

Santa brought Clare this cute “Anthropology” looking comforter set which lead me to this post.

Suzn+Quilts+bird+shamUnfortunately the set didn’t come with a dust ruffle.

I guess dust ruffles are no longer the thing because they’re hard to find in any form.

She looked for a while, then I told her we could make our own.

She really wanted a gold polka dot ruffle…

So, she bought a cream dust ruffle, then I added the sparkle yesterday.

I wanted these sleeves… on this bodice… with this skirt, with this train…

I get my creativity from her.

I hope you’re able to spend Thanksgiving with those you’re thankful for like I am!

Our pies are warm from the oven & ready to go to my sister’s house for dinner at noon.

Suzn+Quilts+pies+2015

Clare baked the Cherry & David & I made the rest.

It takes all morning since they have different baking times…

Too bad for my family, I make them come for cinnamon rolls at 7:30 a.m.

When they start whining I just ask them if they want pie for lunch or not.

Wow does the whining stop in a hurry.

I think everyone’s favorite is here at least none will go to waste!

Happy Thanksgiving &

Knee Deep in Red Crosses Today

I can’t believe it’s been a year & a half (no way…) since we celebrated Chloe’s college graduation & in a few weeks we’ll be celebrating Blake’s.

I don’t think I procrastinate, it’s just time flying faster than me!

Nothing like a bit of a reality check for a kick in the pants, huh?

Being a quilter…

I had this cool idea for Chloe’s party.

Suzn+Quilts+Red+cross+sign+block.jpg

Until today, this is where cool idea had stagnated for the past 18 months.

Before her graduation I received these lovelies for my 50th birthday from some of my quilting friends & since the colors went together perfectly with this piece of nursing fabric & her signature blocks, I thought this is where the quilt was going. Also, because Chloe spends time with these quilting friends at market with me that would be even more special.

Suzn+Quilts+Red+cross+friends+gifts.jpg

Today though, when I came across this piece of fabric,

Suzn+Quilts+Red+cross+perfect+focal+fabric.jpg

I knew it was where this quilt needed to go since this fabric matches Chloe’s living room perfectly. This also leaves my friends’ gifts to do something just for me.

Suzn+Quilts+Red+cross+perfect+fabric+collection.jpg

I had these charm packs or pieces of charm packs close by.

Look how perfectly they coordinate with a one of the nurse hats.

Suzn+Quilts+Red+cross+fabric+perfection.jpg

This was meant to be!

I’m so excited to get working on this project, finally!

So, I’m marking crosses

(notice I had the guests sign pieces of fabric ironed onto freezer paper with a window cut where they should sign instead of the actual hat shape)

Suzn+Quilts+Red+cross+mark+cross.jpg

& practicing my stitching.

Suzn+Quilts+Red+cross+practice+cross+stitching.jpg

I don’t want to mess any of these up.

Sadly, three of our relatives that attended the party have passed away since then, including my Mother-in-law just last month.

This is what I treasure about these kind of projects.

My next obstacle is whether to include my block as “Susan R. Marth” or if I should do like David did & sign it “Mom.”

What do you think?

Suzn+Quilts+Red+cross+sign+block

Please don’t tell me to include both because I have an even 48 blocks including just one for me.

Gotta get to work.

Is this procrastinating, Lol???

Don’t tell Chloe, I want her to be surprised.

Plus I may get delayed again so I wouldn’t want to get her hopes up.

Just keep sewing!

Cutie Patootie Christmas Stocking

Several months ago (I’m not telling how many…)

I bought this pretty Barbara Brackman charm pack & two coordinating prints.Suzn+Quilts+Richmond+RedsThis is what I had in mind.

Suzn+Quilts+Tiny+Bits+of+Dresden+Stocking#231+RGB

I LOVE these stockings!!!

They’re fun to make & so darn cute!

I cut the charm squares into fourths making 2-1/2″ squares.

Then I made this.

Suzn+Quilts+Tiny+bits+stocking+patchwork

I love using a stripe fabric for bias binding.

It creates a nice barber pole effect around the perimeter.

How cute is this hanger?

Suzn+Quilts+Tiny+tape+hanger

Instead of my usual binding loop,

I used an antique-looking twill measuring tape ribbon for the loop.

You can purchase this twill measuring tape ribbon on my website, $2.00/ yd.

Totally cute for a sewist friend, don’t you think?

Perhaps you need a secret sister gift idea?

Well, you have a special friend or two at the very least!

This is what I’ve been up to.

What about you?

Just keep sewing…
