Dresden Plates, My Life, New Pattern Sample

I Need a Few Elves

I finally cut the new Gratitude & Preservation fabrics yesterday.

Suzn+Quilts+Sewing+Gratitude+Cause+selvages

I cut lots of Mini Dresden petals for my next quilt.

Suzn+Quilts+Sewing+Gratitude+Cause+petals

Betsy is a lot of help.

Suzn+Quilts+Pressinging+Gratitude+Cause+petals

She keeps the string of petals wrinkle free until I can get to them.

Today I’m trimming and pressing

Suzn+Quilts+Pressinging+Gratitude+Cause+pressing+petals

but I could use some elves to help me out!

Do you know of any?

What have you been doing this Labor Day weekend?

The carnival is in town so we’ve been eating well!

And of course as always, David shot the star out so we have a new addition to our family.

Suzn+Quilts+Sewing+Gratitude+Cause+turtle+face

And as always, the prizes are huge!

Suzn+Quilts+Sewing+Gratitude+Cause+Big+turtle+face

This guy takes up my entire 4′ drafting table!

Everyone needs a 4′ sea turtle, right?

It won’t be here long.

I mentioned Clare giving maybe giving it to one of her little babysitting friends that’s turning 3 this week and although she already bought her a very cool gift, she’s excited that she’ll be the hit of the party when she shows up with the huge turtle!

She and her big sister will be able to sit on this guy at the same time and still have turtle left over!

[and I’m excited too ;)]

Perfect Petals Every Time

Since I’ve never had a problem making precise little Dresden plates

and by now I’ve made thousands of of them,

I forget that some folks may not share my painless path.

I was reminded of that this week by Cheryl via email.

She & some friends are working on my Dresden Heaven pattern that I was just discussing with you a few days ago.

Suzn+Quilts+Dresden+Heaven#230+RGB

They were curious why their plates were not lying flat.

I told her that their seam allowances were not a true scant 1/4”.

If your seams are not exact & you sew 12 of them around the entire plate it adds up!

I noticed this phenomenon while teaching a workshop a while back.

Luckily I had with me a story board that I use to show how a plate goes together so my students were able to lay their sewn petals on my board to see if they were sewing accurately.

Suzn+Quilts+story+board+image

As I’ve mentioned before, the mindless chain piecing of Dresden petals

allows my mind to wander…

Suzn+Quilts+check+Dresden+plate+accuracy+petals

(OK, I admit it, my mind wanders during a lot of things that I do!)

Anyway, that gave me the idea to make a diagram so my Dresden-sewing-friends could easily measure their sewn petals.

Several hours & a ream of paper later…

Suzn+Quilts+check+Dresden+plate+accuracy+papers

Voila!

Suzn+Quilts+check+Dresden+plate+accuracy

Not so easy going from the shape of the template to the shape the petal takes on after the first seam, then trying to put a seam allowance on just one side of each petal all with bias sides, ugh!

But I did it and each pair I made today (92 so far) all fit perfectly.

Suzn+Quilts+Dresden+plate+accurate

It’s not magic and I’m NOT Wiley Coyote Super Sewing Genius either!

It’s this:

1. Start with starched fabric (before you cut any strips).

2. Cut accurately.

3. Sew with a scant 1/4” seam allowance.

4. Trim each petal as indicated in my patterns.

5. Starch again when the plate is complete.

I plan to make these diagrams a part of each of my Dresden patterns from today forward.

I want everyone to enjoy making little Dresden plates as much as I do!

I will put this page on my website if I can but for now if you’re working on one of my patterns just send me an email and I will email you a copy of this sheet to print out.

A note about printing too:

When you go to print you need to be sure your printer is set to print “as in document” not “fit to page” or it will make everything a bit smaller. (this note is on the sheet as well.)

These diagrams will only work for you if you’re sewing one of my patterns because I made them based on the exact sizes of the templates that I designed which just so happen to be for sale on my website: SuznQuilts.com.

Suzn+Quilts+Tiny+Dresden+Template Suzn+Quilts+MiniDresdenTemplate

Now back to sewing for me.

Suzn+Quilts+check+Dresden+plate+accuracy+mini+tiny

I’m making wings (pairs of petals).

It’s the perfect exercise for today’s lesson on accurately sewing 2 petals together!

I’ve started with my new Pumpkin Pie fabric.

Recognize it?

New Moda Fabric Collection

New Fabric- Preservation

The 4th and final collection that I have to show you is Moda’s new “Quilt for a Cause” collection,

Preservation.Suzn+Quilts+PerservationPreservation is 19th in their “Quilt for a Cause” series.

The collection was inspired by a quilt from England dating to 1830.

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+quilt+for+a+cause+light

It will benefit the

International Quilt Study Center & Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska

which is a learning center.

They have a collection of quilts,

related textiles and documents

for the purpose of study, insight and inspiration.

Perhaps you’ve been there?

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+fat+quarters

Glad to know such a good cause will benefit from the sale of these lovely fabrics!

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+fat+quarters+2

The colors are lovely!

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+fat+quarters+close

I love it when collections mix the all the colors of the collection in all or most all the fabrics.

It makes for a low contrast quilt which I find very appealing.

The colors blend from one fabric to the next.

I used a similar collection for Dresden Heaven.

Suzn+Quilts+Dresden+Heaven#230+RGB

This pattern is available here on my website.

Low contrast, making it very calming to look at.

Suzn+Quilts+Perservation+fat+quarters+3Notice the aqua fabrics have red and cream,

the red fabrics have the cream, aqua and brown,

You can see the complete collection at Moda by going here.

Preservation

Preservation is due in quilt shops in September.

You have plenty of time to sew up some of your stash to make room for it.

So, GO QUILT!

I will too!

Much cuter with faces, buttons & scarves don’t you think?

The pattern includes instructions for 4 quilts;

2 for your wall or door,

plus two for your tables.

These are quick & easy enough you’ll certainly make more than one!

Warm & Natural Cotton Batting & walking foot a must.

Dresden Plate Quilt, New lap quilt pattern, New Moda Fabric Collection, New Pattern Sample, quilt as you go lap quilt

New Patterns-Spring 2015-Dresden Trellis

Another new pattern incorporating my Tiny Dresden & Mini Dresden plates,

surprised aren’t you?

This quilt also incorporates my unique Quilt-as-you-go technique.

Meet Dresden Trellis.

Suzn+Quilts+Dresden+Trellis+Cover+RGB

I never get tired of designing & making these lap quilts.

Know why???

They’re quick & easy of course!

I’ve added applique to the borders,

applique that uses my Tiny  Dresden & Mini Dresden petals…

in a nontraditional way!

There is a full-size applique sheet to align the stems perfectly!

Like Garden Romance,

the stems are made easily with Clover’s fusible bias tape maker.

It was also made with

Collections+Mill+1892

Moda’s Mill Book 1892.

Any questions?

Pattern is now on my website if you can’t find it at your favorite quilt shop.

One more new pattern to show you.

Just keep sewing,

Well, this is what I was working on, Summer Blooms.

Suzn+Quilts+Summer+Blooms+cover+RGB

Summer Blooms continues the theme of incorporating my

Tiny Dresden & Mini Dresden plates in nontraditional ways.

I fractured the mini Dresden plates &

inserted a square in the center of them.

Fun, huh?

I think so.

All piecing, all the time!

I forgot to mention in my last post & it stands true for this quilt as well,

100% sewn by machine.

The only hand work I did on this & on Garden Romance is stitching the binding down.

I use a tiny blind hem stitch to applique the Dresden plates.

This quilt was also made using the new

Collections+Mill+1892

Mill Book 1892 by Moda.

Summer Blooms can now be found on my website if your favorite shop isn’t carrying it yet.

New Christmas Quilt Patterns, Tiny Dresden quilts

Houston Fall Quilt Market 2014 recap

Susan+Chloe+booth+Houston2014-watermark

I’m so thankful that even though Chloe has graduated & has a big girl (non-quilt related) job that she still wants to take time off & help me at market.

Her help is fantastic!

I say help, but once I explain my new designs she can sell Suzn Quilts as well as I can.

It’s back-breaking work from the minute we leave home

and besides all the fun quilters we meet each day,

her only real reward is a good dinner at the end of each day…

We had lots of interest in my new Tiny Dresden Series.

Suzn+Quilts+Tiny+Dresden+retail+brochure

Along with the Tiny Dresden Template

SuznQuilts+Tiny+Dresden+Plate+Template+insert+Front+10-5-14

That makes these 4″ cuties…

Suzn+Quilts+Tiny+Dresden+plate

I LOVE to make these Tiny Dresden Plates!

They’re a bit addictive, so beware!!!

No hand work unless you want to make them by hand.

My quilt-as-you-go patterns sold very well also.

Suzn+Quilts+A+Pretty+Table+#214+Cover

My new table runner & place mats make great holiday gifts & decor,

but many quilters are making them in batiks & other non-Christmas colors.

Think outside the bun…

Suzn+Quilts+A+Merry+Christmas+to+you+frontcover+web

Since my new “A Merry Christmas to you” can be a Block-of-the-Month,

mystery or stand alone pattern, it sold well too.

Notice those cute tiny Dresden Plates in that pattern too?

Yep, they’re catching on!

Catch some for yourself at your local quilt shop or

at SuznQuilts.com.

I have a few new designs that we took pre-orders on,

but I still need to get the photography done on them.

You can see them in the above booth photo by “Frosty” if you look closely.

I’ll show you them as soon as they’re ready.

I hope you’re getting some quilting time in too.

Until next time,

Susan
