Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Blog Tour

Welcome to 100 Blocks Blog Tour!

I’m honored to be part of the second volume of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks.

While vending at Minnesota’s International Quilt Market in May, I was asked to submit a block to be considered for this issue.  What an honor to be selected along with 99 other talented quilt designers.

My block, #140 “No Ordinary Flake” is featured on page 41.

I used civil war fabrics that I collected while in Minnesota for spring quilt market.  And by “collected” I mean Celine, Robin & I had to visit at least four different quilt shops in the Minneapolis area so I had fabric for this block submittal.  What a girl has to go through! Here’s a setting option for a 54″ square quilt.

This would make a nice sized wall or baby quilt. I like the secondary pattern made by the four patch background squares.

To make this quilt, first make 16 blocks, instructions from magazine, then add:

Now for the really exciting part, if you leave a comment (Back at the top by the date) on my blog between now and Wednesday night you will be entered to win a free copy of this issue!   I will draw a lucky winner Thursday morning.  Be sure and leave an email address so I can contact the winner.  Also visit Quiltmaker.com because they are giving away lots of other prizes, including the original signed blocks from this issue, and some of my “Best Friends” books to name only a few.

Good Luck & Have Fun!

Until next time,

Susan

  5. Congrats on being included in the magazine. I love your block as it’s my favorite thing recently, mixing piecing with applique, the more fabrics used, the better. I’m now impatient after visiting the blogs today and really, really want my copy now. LOL I’ll definitely be first in line on d-day.

  6. What an awesome block, and I love the quilt setting too!! It looks lovely in repros, but would look great also in hot pinks and lime greens, or Christmas fabrics!

  7. I LOVE,LOVE, LOVE this quilt. The design is so simple yet very eye appealing. I have been cutting scraps into squares to make four patches and didn’t know what I was going to do to set them together, but this is the ticket. Thank you!

  11. I actually also like this block as a quilt stitch pattern — I have a winter themed top that needs to be quilted and have been on the lookout for good snowflake designs.

That’s what’s great about the “100 Blocks” issues, they give you a lot of inspiration. Can’t wait to win or buy this one!

  12. Your quilt block is so nice in the pink and brown, and background fabric is just perfect. As for snowflakes in MN I am sure they are right around the corner.

  13. Love the pink & chocolate fabric. Also alternate design. Would be cute in brights too. Congrats for being placed in the book.

  14. I love this block, especially in the pink and brown. It is amazing how you have used Civil War repro fabric and have turned it into such a modern looking design. I can’t wait to try this!

  15. love the colors and laughed at the shop hunt, Ive done that too. TG for the internet when you have to have one more yard! Congrats on making it into the book, cant wait to get one.

  19. Seriously… Susan to Susan
Nice block! Applique on Antique like fabrics – two of my loves in quilting! The modern snowflake is fun with the fabric choices!

  20. I love your block and the brown/pink color scheme is so pretty. I can also see this in blue and white. This block goes in my book as a favorite! Thanks for a chance to win a copy of the 100 Blocks issue.

  21. Love the color combo and also think it would be grat in a soft purple and lime green. Thanks so much for sharing.

  29. Your block is so sweet, and we all appreciate all the extra shopping you had to go through to find just the right fabric!

  30. I’m using these browns and double pinks in the Bonnie Hunter mystery that’s just starting. I’ll plan to have enough scraps to make your design.

  31. This is a wonderful block – I’m a piecer and it is pieced. I can see myself making this even with the applique. The Civil War fabrics are lovely. Thanks for the giveaway and please enter me into your drawing. alternate email mlwright29 (at) hotmail (dot) com

  32. Pink and Brown flakes, not ordinary at all and why I luv ’em!!! Thanks for participating in the book and a give a way!

  33. Love the block and the idea of a hundred new ideas. Congratualtions on being chosen, I am looking forward to seeing the magazine.

  34. I like the block from Gateway Quilts, and I’m especially intrigued by her technique for curved piecing since I have no experience in that. Can’t wait to see the other featured designers!

  35. This is a nice block. It took me by surprise. At first I looked at it and thought…hmmm …pink and brown for snowflakes? But the more I looked at it the more I loved it. I keep going back and looking at it. I also like the secondary design. I can see that there are just so many possibilities for color choices. But the pink and brown…has a hook on me. I’m diggin’ it!

  36. I really like the block you made for the new “100 blocks” magazine! The colors are my favorites, and I agree, I like the secondary pattern formed when you set the blocks together!

  37. Oh I LOVE your block. I want to do a snowflake quilt so yours might be the one. One of my favorite color combinations is pinks and browns so your block got my attention even more. Just beautiful. I can’t wait to get my hands on this mangazine and in fact, already put hubby on notice that we will be out magazine shopping very soon.

  41. Yeah, mini shop hop for blog fabric. Sounds like great fun! Love your block – I see it with a blue background and white applique. Thanks.

  42. I love your block! Of course, the pink and brown combo is one of my favourites, so that helped too!
We’ve had our first snowfall of the season already – not that it lasted long – but it’s helping me to get into the Christmas-crafting mood!

  43. Love your block and also your new patterns that you showed at Guild meeting tonight.
Congratulations on being asked to submit a
block to the new magazine. You are a very talented gal!

  44. I love your snowflake block and it is very cool how the secondary pattern happens when you put the blocks together.

Regards from a Western Canadian quilter,
    Anna

  45. I love the snowflake in pink and brown! Very into that right now…but will have to run out and buy more fabric, oh the tragedy! And thank you that it has 6 points! Drives me crazy how many things have 8 pointed “snowflakes”, grrr!

  46. What a sweet block, and the fabrics you used are great, love the colors and the finished quilt. My little one would love to have one like that since pink is her favorite color! Thank you for posting directions to make the quilt.

  47. I really thought this block was a daisy, and was pleasantly surprised to see it was a snowflake. Right away my mind flipped to a hot pink and turqoise backgound, with white flowers on top. I have teenage daughters, which is probably why my mind is flipping to those colours. But a good block is one that is versatile, and yours is. Congratulations.

  48. I really like the combination of pink and browns. The block is very pretty and would make a very sweet little girl’s quilt! I enjoyed reading and learning about you!

  49. Totally adorable! I can see that as a girl’s quilt easily. I have 3 girls so I’m always on the look out for something for them! Great job!

  50. Love this block! Could work in so many color ways for different effects! Thank you for participating in the blog tour. Your time and work is certainly appreciated!

  51. Beautiful block and I really like your Civil War fabric choices. Such a chore to go shopping for fabric. :)

  52. Great block! It would be a fun one to test out in different colorways. Thanks for the chance to win the magazine – I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy!

  53. Susan I just made your block from 100 blocks vol. 2 and will be posting it tomorrow along with another block. I made a challenge to make all 100 blocks in a year. I have a few bloggers joining me too. I think we must be some crazy quilters to do this, but this week we are up to blocks 17 and 18.

Anyway(you know quilters can get off topic LOL), I just wanted to say I love your block and had so much fun making it. Also, congratulations on being included in the magazine; I didn’t get a chance to visit all the blogs during the tour.

  54. I experimented with viewing your blog in my blackberry and the page layout doesnt seem to be correct. Might wanna check it out on WAP as well as it seems most cellphone layouts are not really working with your web page.
