New Pattern Sample, New Quilt pattern sample, quilt as you go lap quilt

I started 3 quilts today

I don’t usually start three quilts at once,

but since these three quilts will be using my Quilt-as-you-go technique

and I need an extra set of hands to quickly spray baste the backing fabric and batting together,

first-thing this morning I got started before my second set of hands headed out the door for school.

I first taped the backing fabric wrong-side-down in my (freshly swept) garage.

I topped that with a light layer of basting spray.

Next is where #1 helper, Chloe, comes in with her second set of hands and helps to hold the batting off the tacky backing fabric until I can press it down smoothly.

1, 2, 3, Perfect.

Not a single wrinkle!

Years of practice…and I only use Warm & Natural cotton batting.

Sorry for the weird glare, that’s the sun rising.

Now when I start to “quilt-as-I-go” I won’t have to move any pins.
I love this technique.

Do you use basting spray?

I’ve never had a problem using it, but I know of others who have.

Usually it’s the brand, or the amount.

If you spray too much it will gunk (technical term) up your needle,

then it can’t pick up the bobbin thread.

Sparingly is a good term for the amount of spray that I use.

As I was working at the computer getting my instructions in order

my friendly UPS driver delivered these from Sulky.

Just in time to be included in these three quilts.

They match the Odds and Ends fabrics that I showed you yesterday.

C-O-L-O-R

A bit of 30 wt. for the piecing and some 12 wt. for the applique that’s going to help me “name” these quilts. ;)

Now, back to work for me.

I’m going to get reaquainted with my sewing machine.

Until next time,

Susan

Oh, how I LOVE color!

Is it just me…

or could you too, sit and sew with these all day long?

I love color(s)!

This is more of Julie Comstock’s new Odds and Ends fabric line by Moda.

I’ve given you a couple of glimpses of it recently,

but yesterday I received a bit more for a few projects that I’m working on for market next month.

Yikes, that’s way too soon!

I noticed as I moved our

latte bowls from Anthropologie

from this serving (not tray, not platter, not bowl) whatever it is,

that the colors of some of the bowls matched the fabrics perfectly.

Color!!!

This is our kitchen table centerpiece this summer.

My daughter Clare and I bought these at Anthropologie last winter, one of every color they had.

When we brought them home,

they landed on this cool platter with wire base…thing.

How perfect to set our useless adorable little latte bowls on.

They make me smile, kind of like a new box of 64 crayons.

It would seem Clare has a few of my genes, she talked me into buying them.

Back to the fabric…

You can see the whole collection at Moda.

I like to go here and look at “Future Groups” to see what’s coming out.

Odds and Ends is due out this month, so check you local quilt shops.

I need to get sewing.

I’ve got some quilts to name (hint, hint).  ;)

Until next time,

Susan

Home again, Home again, Jiggety jig!

…and I’m so glad and so exhausted!

There’s a lot of physical labor required for attending market, both as a vendor & shopper.

I was fortunate enough to have my daughter, Chloe help me out again.

This shows our booth after everything was moved in and the drapes were hung.

Since we drove a short 4 hours to Kansas City this year, we could bring along some fun props.

This is a photo of the booth almost set-up, Chloe filing a broken nail?  Lots of that happening!

You would not believe all the compliments we got on the hanging chairs!!!

Market was great, with lots of shop owners walking the floor & shopping!

We handed out over 600 brochures.

Here are some of our first shoppers.

I’ve said it many times before, but I’ll say it again. There are so many nice people in the quilting industry!!!

We had many compliments on our booth and the quilts.

Of course my favorite part is taking orders and sharing the weekend with friends that I’ve met over the years while attending market.

More photos of market neighbors & friends to come.

Until next time,

Susan

Spring Market Quilt Pattern Debut, Cars on the Road

I know it’s been long in the making, believe me, I know!

It’s hard to believe just how long it really does take to get an idea from my head into pattern form, and this is with a LOT of technology!

Lately I’ve been starting my designs on my computer using a design program.

Not that it designs the quilt for me, but I draw my sketches on my computer, unless I’ve started with a doodle, then I scan that into my computer as a jumping off place. It’s so much easier to begin in my computer for my applique pieces especially, then I don’t have to scan and re-draw them when I start writing the pattern.

So, I draw an applique shape, or start a block with my mouse. This way I can play with scale, color, proportion, textures in fabrics, and get perspective, all without using any fabric or thread (so much quicker than sewing and un-sewing, etc.)  This is especially handy when I have only so much sample fabric to use, or I’m trying to figure out how much sample fabric to order from my generous supplier; Moda Fabrics.  They have been VERY generous to me, sending me new fabrics before they are even available to shops. When I go to market, quilt shop owners can see my new designs in fabrics they’ve just received or about to receive and it helps to sell the pattern & fabrics if they are somewhat coordinated.

After I’ve decided on a design, I gather the appropriate fabrics and sew the sample(s), quilt them, or like a lot of my new designs this year, send them out to be quilted.  Since my quilter, Judy Bishop moved, I have to ship them to her.  She is like a magician.  I send her my quilt tops, backing fabric and batting and she sends me back a beautiful quilt.  I don’t tell her how to quilt my tops, she has a sixth sense about her that can see exactly what my top needs and just does it!  I am spoiled by her!

Usually while I’m waiting on that part, I can start writing my instructions on my computer, using the notes that I made while sewing and my computer generated illustrations.  This time, instead of writing those instructions, I went right to work on another quilt. I actually sent Judy multiple quilts at once (a few times) to get all my samples quilted!  I was making several quilts together to go into a couple of books.

So, while Judy was quilting for me, I wrote instructions & had a couple of testers sewing and proofing my work. Then I get quilts back from Judy, put binding on them, and schedule my photographer. It takes a couple or few days for him to do his work getting the photos just right.  While I wait for that,  I can design the covers, adding just the right colors to enhance each quilt.

After I decide on a layout for a cover, I make at least three versions with various color backgrounds and have them printed.  Next I trim them up and put them in pattern bags.  I then hang them up and have family members vote on their favorite one. If I stand back a bit I can usually tell which one shows off the quilt the best.  That’s the one I want!

Then it’s back to the computer making the files so that the printer can print from them.

When I make a book like this time (x 2!) you can multiply this all by 5 or 6 or so…

Then I end up with this

Image

It’s the latest of my Quilt-as-you-go lap quilts.

I’ve used mostly Salt Air by Cosmo Cricket for Moda Fabics.

I love making these.

You cut the backing & batting to the finished size of the quilt and baste them together. Fill the foundation with strips, then add binding and it’s done!

This one uses a jelly roll and some yardage.

The pattern is available on my website.

Stay tuned for the rest of my new patterns this week.

Until next time,

Susan

What am I doing now???

Well, can you guess from this photo?

No, I’m not making a kite’s tail, although today would have beena great day to fly one!

Here they are trimmed apart.

Next, I added another line of rick rack.

and once again, trimmed them apart.

Still not clear what I’m doing?

Know what?  I’ll bet you can’t guess unless you have been testing one of my soon-to-be-patterns.

Soon enough…(not soon enough for me, I’m so far behind where I’d like to be)

Until next time,

Susan

For Everything there is a Season

Who knows what season it is outside this week?

It is Winter

It looks like Spring.

It feels like Summer!

Just the middle of March, and the extended 7 day forecast here in the lower half of Illinois is 80+ degrees EVERY DAY!

My flowers are blooming!

Inside it’s Spring Quilt Market Prep Season!

I’ve been picking and pruning my “Salt Air” and adding a few others that are acting like fertilizer, making the pretty stuff prettier!

It’s fun to FINALLY cut into this stuff.  When it’s early in the season, with a limited supply of the good stuff, I can’t bear to cut until I know for sure the design is just right!

And this is what I’m working on today.

How about you?  Are you doing your spring gardening yet?

Until next time,

Susan

Out Quilt Shoppin’

It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it!

That’s right, buying fabric.

This is how they looked on the bolts,

and this is how they look sitting on my work table.

(next to some of my new threads)

Also shown is my Garden Trellis pattern that I’m making with these new fabrics.

I’m teaching this quilt at a workshop next month and decided I wanted another sample.

Garden Trellis has been one of my best-sellers since I dreamed it up in 2005.

That’s right, I dreamed it!

I literally woke up and came downstairs and sketched it and the next day sewed it.

David thought (& still thinks) I was crazy, but how crazy is it now that it’s one of my top-selling patterns???

Do you ever dream in quilting?

Time to sew…

Until next time,

Susan

Happy Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I hope you had a nice day with a bit of love included too!

Along with the day-to-day business stuff I made cookies for my valentines.

I love this recipe for two reasons; they taste great and you roll them into a ball then roll the ball in sugar, not the roll out and cut sugar cookie.

Sugar Cookies

From Suzette Krummel Quilt Retreat 1999

1 cup Butter

3/4 cup Vegetable Oil

1 cup Granulated Sugar

1 cup Powdered Sugar

1 tsp. Baking Soda

4 cups Flour

1 tsp. Cream of Tartar

1 tsp. Salt

1 tsp. Vanilla

2 eggs

Decorative sugars or nonpareils

Cream butter, oil and both sugars; add eggs & vanilla.  Sift dry ingredients, stir in and blend.  Chill dough for 1 hour.

Roll a teaspoon of dough into a ball.  Roll in decorative sugar.

Bake at 375˚ for 12 minutes.  Remove to cooling rack.

Yields approx. 8 dozen cookies.

I then quilted my “Heartfelt Table Runner” a mystery I designed for my guild, but soon to be a new pattern.

I also made Valentines for my sweethearts from here.

I just printed out 4 per page onto cardstock, punched a hole and added ribbon and a message then tied them to my gifts.  Isn’t she adorable?

I hope you had a lovely day too!

Until next time,

Susan

Retreat means sew, sew, sew

Last weekend I was once again fortunate to attend our annual reatreat at Rosemary’s Quilt Shop in Highland Illinois.

The first floor & basement are the quilt shop floors.  Rosemary lives on the second and third floors.  It’s a beautiful older home and the owner/occupant is a wonderful host!  On the days that she has retreats, she reatreats to the third floor leaving enough sleeping rooms for 6 quilters on the second floor.

For the past 8(?) years a group of us have met for a weekend each winter and sewed, sewed, sewed.  The basement is set up to sew and snack 24 hrs. a day if you want.  Within two blocks there are authentic Mexican, Italian and Chinese restaurants. No need to pack any food!  Of course there are lots of other restautants around town too as well as Walmart, Walgreens, etc.

Another great perk to sewing here is that Rosemary has everything you might need at any time, day or night; fabric of course, basting spray, batting, you get the picture!

This year I decided to take along a project that I started at our quilt designer retreat in November.

I made 7 of the blocks in Minnesota where I bought the book & kit. I pieced all day Thursday (un-pieced half the day on Friday) and finished the top Friday evening.

It’s “Peony Patch” from the book Summer Gatherings by Lisa Bongean & Carole Charles.  The finished size is 20″ x 24″.  It was designed with little leaves on every block, but after I got those appliqued on I didn’t like them!  It took me about 6 hours to remove them and re-sew the stem…  I love it now.  I’m trying to decide how to quilt it.  I’d like to give it to a professional, but it’s so small I’m embarrassed to send it out!

Next I made more of these; mini Dresden plates with my template.

I love using my Clover Mini Iron.

It gets super hot and presses the little petals very flat, plus it’s light-weight and doesn’t heat up the whole room while I’m pressing a million of these things.

Since these seams are pressed open, the mini iron tip can get right in there and press those flat too.

These are looking great with my Salt Air fabrics.

Love, love love them!

Can’t wait to show you how these are going together, but no photos ’til they’re done!

I’ve also got a new lap quilt just for little boys about finished…Nothing like a quilt retreat with all sewing, all the time to get my creative juices flowing!

Until next time,

Susan

And on that trip I took this bag

It’s my “Pack Rat Sack” and I made it the day before we left on our trip.

There is a drawstring to close up the top,

and then a cute clasp,

an inside zipper for small items,

and best of all it folds up super small for travel.

I like this kind of bag to take to the beach (wish I were back there now…) and for shopping while we’re out and about; large capacity, but light-weight.

I see a pattern in its future.

Until next time,

Susan
