Tiny Dresden Seasonal Series

Back in May, just in time for spring market in Pittsburgh, I got the brainy idea to design a series of

REALLY TINY seasonal quilts to fit a tiny,

Ackfeld Wire 6 x 6 frame.

Ackfeld+6x6+stand+88017

I wanted to use my new Tiny Dresden Template,

Tiny+Dresden+Template

& I wanted the quilts to be seasonal, one for each month.

Within a week, I had the samples ready to go to market (in hind sight, that was the easy part)

but then once market was over came the task of creating the twelve patterns!

  • writing
  • testing
  • editing
  • photographing
  • pricing
  • more testing
  • sending files
  • ordering buttons & charms
  • waiting…

Each quilt:

  • measures 6″ x 8″
  • incorporates hand embroidery with perle cotton thread
  • uses Tiny Dresden petals that make a seasonal design
  • button(s) or charm included in pattern
  • $7.50 ea. retail per pattern
  • fabric kits available $8.00 (limited supply)
  • extra button kits available $2.00 per month

With the exception of the hand embroidery & the binding,

every step was done on my sewing machine

even sewing on the buttons & making the label,

which I’ve included instructions for!

–Extra button kits

— Fabric kits (limited supply)

–Wire stands

are available on my website now &

hopefully at your local quilt shop soon!

Now you know how I spent my summer!

Presently I’m working on more ways to use my fun

Tiny Dresden Template…

Best Selling Quilt Pattern, A Pretty Package

What am I up to?

Today I am making another sample of my best selling quilt pattern,

A Pretty Package!

Since my booth in Pittsburgh next month will be full of “Winterlude”

I decided to show my best selling pattern, A Pretty Package, decked out in to too!

Suzn+Quilts+A+Pretty+Pkg+Winterlude+pin+strips

So far, I’ve prepared the “foundation” and started sewing strips.

Layered bath towels are the best pressing surface.

I can press the entire strip at once with no draping & distorting.

Suzn+Quilts+A+Pretty+Pkg+Winterlude+press+strip+flat

It’s very important to press the seams flat as sewn first,

Suzn+Quilts+A+Pretty+Pkg+Winterlude+press+seam+open

then press them open.

This keeps them straight all across the quilt.

Suzn+Quilts+A+Pretty+Pkg+Winterlude+add+next+strip&measure

The MOST IMPORTANT step is to measure, measure, measure.

If you sew a strip on crooked, then sew a bunch more strips to it, a little more crooked each time, well… you will have a very crooked quilt indeed!

Next, pin, sew, repeat…

Now I’m prepared to sew the top strips in the same fashion.

Suzn+Quilts+A+Pretty+Pkg+Winterlude+preparetosewtopstrips

This is where I am tonight.

I’ve had a few interruptions so I didn’t get as far as I would have liked today;

getting Nemo from the groomer,

dinner,

The Voice with fellow family members,

followed by August: Osage County from Redbox.

I love Merle & Julia, but that movie was a bit much…

I’m going to continue sewing,

but as soon as chickadee #2 gets home I’m done for the day.

Tune in tomorrow to see the rest of the story!

Until next time,

Susan

New patterns with Vintage Play

I’ve been really busy these past months using my new fabric line,

Vintage Play by Red Rooster.

Panel+24303_mul1

This is the panel with 12 blocks that can be trimmed to 6-1/2″.

Butterflies+24306_mul1

The puppies are available in 2 colorways.

Blue dogs+24310_blu1

Red+dogs+24310_red1

The check print makes a great border!

Checks+24309_mul1

These tossed flowers are available in 2 colorways too.

Cream+Flowers+24311_cre1

The green tossed flowers are good for a background as well.

Green+Flowers+24311_gre1

The tossed numbers read as solids.

They make great applique in 5 colors!

The road dashes are also in 2 colorways.

Funny thing is, quilters thought they were stitches!

This gives me more ideas…

Black+Road+24308_bla1

In yellow I thought this print would make a great legal pad effect.

Yellow+Road+24308_yel1

You might think it would be hard deciding where to start, but before I even had the fabrics, I designed a free pattern for Red Rooster. After that, the rest just kept coming…

FreePattern+vintageplay313

Mini VP quiltI made this quilt from scraps of “Vintage Play” & “Toy Cars” quilts.

I also have 6 new patterns with Vintage Play.

Add-A-Candle+birthday+counter#207+cover+WEBAdd-a-Candle birthday counter.

This is a birthday counter that you add a candle to each year to celebrate a child’s age. I suggest making as many candles as you intend to add to this quilt when you make the quilt so you don’t have to go back each year & make another candle. This is also a good idea to give to mom’s that don’t sew. Just fusing the candles each year will be OK, because you won’t need to wash the quilt.

Measuring+Up+Cover+WEB

Measuring Up!

I designed this to measure children’s height, but at market & festival I think more quilters were interested in buying the pattern so they could hang the quilt in their sewing room!  I didn’t even think of that! Guess where this is going later…

Crooked 9-Patch #122 Cover+web

Crooked 9-Patch is a stack, cut & swap quilt.

It’s actually a revised older pattern of mine that I’ve taught to children at summer camps. It’s quick, easy and as long as you sew a straight seam, the quilt will lay flat!

My+Pencil+Box+WEBMy Pencil Box

is another of my Quilt-as-you-go lap quilt patterns.

In case you’ve not seen my tutorial on this you can see it here.

Quick & easy lap quilts…  my thing!

These next two quilts are traditionally pieced, then handed of to my awesome quilter, Tamara.

Oh+Happy+Daisy#211coverWEBOh Happy Daisy,

also a lap quilt, but with great-big applique!

Out+to+Play#212coverWEB

Out to Play.

This is also a lap quilt with great, big applique.

Another new Pattern, Peppermint Pizzazz

I know, you don’t hear from me in 2 months, and now it’s 2 posts in 2 days!

Well, I have 4 new patterns and a new book, so I plan to show you all of them here before I get too busy again.

So, this is new pattern #2, Peppermint Pizzazz.

Peppermint Pizzazz #205CoverWatermark webIt is also made with Deb Strain’s Christmas Countdown fabrics by Moda.

I didn’t think to add that info in yesterday’s post, sorry.

The fabrics should be shipping to your local quilt shop any day.

I love this pattern.

It includes a 30″ square quilt & a 13″ octagonal quilt.

The holly on the 4 peppermints are actually buttons by Just Another Button Company.

They’re perfect for setting off the mints I think.

Once all the pieces are cut it’s just fun sewing, like building a puzzle.

These will look great on a table top, lining a Christmas basket or hanging on a wall & they’re small enough to make as gifts.

More to come tomorrow!

Until next time,

Susan

A Quilt Along, My Life

Moda Signature Quilt Along – Day 11

I finally decided which block would be my 30th block.

Day 11

I thought this block would make a nice finish.

Day11-Block21MaryJane

Block 21 signed by Mary Jane.

Now I have no excuses not to complete my quilt top,

unless you count that Quilt Market is just a little over 2 months away, yikes!

Time to quit messing around, having fun

and get back to work!!!

Finishing instructions are on Moda’s blog.

At first I was thinking all those 9 patches would be a bit much,

but then I realized I have about half of each of the half yard cuts left that I started with.

Now I’m thinking perhaps they would make nice 9 patch sashing around these beautiful blocks.

I have time to think on that one.

Until next time,

Susan

A Quilt Along, My Life

Moda Signature Quilt Along – Day 10

Whew!

I barely got the blocks done today.

Let’s see if I can get them posted here while it’s still Saturday!

Day 10

Day 10 Blocks…

Day 10-block1AneelaHoey

Block 1 by Aneela Hoey.

This block took me a little extra time.

Once I started sewing I wanted to keep the fabrics all going the same direction

so I went back a re-cut some of the pieces.

It was worth the extra time I think.

Day10-block 3 American Jane

Block 3 by American Jane.

This is the first time I’ve ever sewn this “Peaky & Spike” block

(as it was known back in the day, not sure it’s current name).

I had to peek at the front of the block after sewing each seam with just one eye,

kind of like how we watch scary movies!

I’m impressed with myself, I didn’t re-sew any of the seams!

Day 10-block 8 LilyAshbury

Block 8 by Lily Ashbury.

This is the only block that I didn’t use just 3 fabrics like the instructions called for.

I already had 4 squares cut of the pink and decided to use them for the corners.

Now to decide what my last block will be.

Since one day last week only had 2 blocks, I need one more.

We’ll just all have to wait & see.

Until next time,

Susan

My Life

Moda Signature Quilt Along – Day 9

Day 9, just one more day…

Day 9

This first block is a cute heart block.

Day 9 block 31 V & CoBlock 31 by V and Co.

When I finished the first two steps I thought the 1-1/2″ squares were too small,

but then when I looked at the illustrations closer,

I realized the top of the heart would be cut off when you sew it into the quilt (on purpose).

Usually with this flying geese step, you have 1/4″ to edge of block,

but not this time.

don’t be fooled!
